Meh.
I am picturing a prissy, 20-something fashion wannabe, cranking out that nothing article on deadline.

Armani designed them. 🤭

All of these outfits were picked by committees, many of them composed solely of Karens.  Anyone having expectations beyond Sears levels of fashion were bound to be disappointed.

I'm unsurprised. When I moved to Italy (Rome and Naples, mostly), I was shocked by how unattractively the average young person seemed to dress. It may just be our different aesthetics, of course, but the general style choices for clothing and attitudes toward makeup (i.e., pile it on your face), went very much against what I was expecting.

/why yes, I did wear comfortable shoes that weren't spiked heels, and yes, the Italians were horrified. Shrug.

Yeah, same here. A side note: I've flown on European airlines. The female flight attendants are so highly made-up and tightly dressed, they look like the women from the Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love" music videos.

But anyway, with the extreme heat in the Tokyo forecast, I'm surprised so many nations decided on outfitting their athletes in a full-on blazer.  Some athletes were sweating as they marched into the arena.

kinda disapointed at Russia they got to pick their name they could have been the United Slav Sportsman of Russia. U.S.S.R for short. instead they stole taiwan's official name. ROC

10. Grenada - complaining about them being "neon green" when only the chest panel was anywhere near neon (the rest was - go figure - the kelly green of their national flag).
9. Costa Rica - Because the other countries wearing blazers and white pants weren't as offensive as *them* somehow....
8. Georgia - Another uniform with a basis in their national flag. Granted their national flag is a St. George's Cross and that means red stripes on white, but whatever.
7. ROC - This one actually confused me when I saw it on the slideshow. Because I saw "ROC" and judo outfits and thought, "okay, it's Taiwan, and?" But it's actually Russia wearing them, which is a little weirder.
6. Paraguay - ...okay, those aren't very good.
5. Belgium - Again, not that good.
4. Ukraine - The sky blue shorts were dumb but the shirt's another flag-inspired thing.
3. Switzerland - Who knew "brown," according to the hack writer, was so...red and pink and maroon?
2. Luxembourg - It's not perfect fashion to the hack therefore it's horrible. (I sense that the hack wanted to hang out with the hippy kids but they wouldn't let them because they would narc in a second.)
1. Italy - Seriously, hack writer, what do you have against flag-inspired clothes AT A FARKING OLYMPICS?

All in all I give the writer a free pass to the nearest therapist and look forward to them biatching about not getting into middle management for the next ten years.

\and you're welcome for me listing them here so you don't have to look at some dipshiat's slideshow

She's right. Grass skirts and oil should become the new go menswear.

I agree with some of them, but overall this was a dumb list. I actually liked some of these, and there were a number that were FAR worse.

I think France won on fashion, Italy did Italy which is their late 70's adidas theme.

Team Spain made my pants tight so they are my random pick to root for, they and 27 other countries have medals while USA does not.

I feel like if you genuinely care about the clothes teams wear to the Olympics, you're living wrong.

2021-07-24 4:18:16 PM
I feel the need to defend some of these.

I think Costa Rica looks pretty great.  I mean, the dark-jacket-white-pants thing isn't exactly imaginative, but they look great and I personally like the multi-button short-lapel design.

With Georgia, I think the red shoulders on their jacket is a cool and unusual design choice that mimics the red stripe/crests on their flag.  Otherwise it is a white jacket with a red shirt and white pants, which seems absolutely fine to me, and a leg stripe is hardly weird.  Standard design adapted with a nice touch.

I don't even want to like the ROC, but these are pretty good. Bright colors are the norm in this venue, and besides, the fact that they mimic the look of a traditional judo or karate uniform is actually a nice nod to the host I think.

Paraguay I actually think are pretty cool.  They have a chill and breezy look about them with the straw hats and watercolor-like stripes, they're well-fitted, and not at all garish or in-your-face while still being distinctive and reflecting their flag.  Also, a match for the hot weather in Japan right now.  Win.

The best thing about the parade of nations is that it doubles as a parade of beautiful people.

Yeah, we should really choose a different designer.

In fact, better idea: instead of an official Olympics designer, how about we do an Olympic outfit design competition where we select the best entry from among independent design labels?  It'd be a nifty way to promote up-and-coming American designers and make our outfits look more interesting besides.

My only real complaint about the parade of nations is the ludicrous proportion of people ducking around with their phones.

If there's ever a moment in your athletic life where it's good to pocket that @&#%ing dingus and Be Here Now, that is it.

They go with the most-profitable deal for the USOC. Lauren/Polo pays them royalties from the sales of clothes and provides all the clothes, which the US olympians are required to wear.

Sure, I figured something like this was the case. It'd be nice if the US could exert some pull on them to change their policy, though.
