When I was in college, the students of Chinese heritage would just borrow an id from similar students slightly older than them.

I don't recall it ever *not* working.

I haven't seen anything that does raised lettering, but all the rest of the required equipment to do this properly is only a few thousand dollars now.  There are companies producing their own internal IDs with these systems, it's standard commercial equipment.

If your fake ID maker can't afford that, they're one step up from using a sharpie on a bit of cardboard.

I simply borrowed my older brother's birth certificate and got an actual ID with his name and my picture.

Not a DL, just an ID.

Used until I turned 21.

You can iron sheen and wet sand edges, but no fake id maker is going to duplicate a state or fedetal seal and risk additional felony charges. You look to see if they are that stupid. If it has a state or federal seal, and it us fake... Well, someone is in deep doo doo. Those are best left to the "state department"

IamTomJoad: Wash state has/had a law that no matter what your age you had to have an ID when in a bar.

PA has that law, too.  You can be 95 years old, and you still (legally) need one of the 4 valid ID types I posted earlier.

We also frequently ID "suspect" people after they enter.  I'm in a college town, and in PA, you only have to be 18 to work in a bar, but you have to be 21 to drink.  The number of times someone has used another person's (real, but not them) ID to get in, only to have one of our waitresses come up to me and say "That girl is in my Freshman English class.  Her name is Julie. She's 19."  Then we discretely go up to her table like we're busing glasses and go, "Are you Julie?" and they almost ALWAYS answer "yeah" then we go, "can I see your ID again? I swear it said your name was Denise Ann ..."

wxboy: This. I've had to use my DL# often enough that I memorized it. Conveniently, when I moved to a new state, they used the same system to assign the number as my previous state, so the DL# stayed the same.

Massachusetts used to use your SSN as your DL number by default, unless you requested otherwise.  (I did.)  I would imagine most people have their SSN memorized.  (Mass. stopped doing that somewhere around the mid 2000s.)

I was a door-man in the 00's and still run door occasionally for a friend's bar on big weekends.  In PA, most of the things in this thread should pass.  There are only 4 acceptable forms of ID as decreed by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB):
1. A state-issued Driver's License
2. A state-issued ID Card (i.e.: a non-Driver's License)
3. A passport with stamped VISA (even if it is a US passport)
4. An active duty (green) Military ID

For all of these, the have to be non-expired.  They have to be non-duplicate.  For the military IDs, they have to be the Active Duty IDs (not the family (Brown) or retiree (Red/Blue)).  The passport MUST be non-expired and be stamped with a VISA (this one always bothered me for the US passports, but I don't make the rules).

As far as detecting fakes, the most common fakes just have the wrong backs or the wrong holograms/blacklight markings.  But fakes are rarely used.  The most common way is to get the ID of an older sibling or a friend that looks similar to you.  That's why duplicates are not allowed.  If you have a duplicate, the bar may ask for more types of IDs to verify who you are.  Another form of photo ID, multiple credit/debit cards, signature match.  One of the big things is asking the information on the ID, but out of order and watching them to see if they have to rattle through the whole thing in their head to get to the right answer.  Ask things like "What is your birth year?" followed by "What is your house/apt number?" then "What is you height?"  Comparing eye color and height is usually a give away as well.  But, beyond that, they can just say "no. We don't have to accept duplicates.  We have enough customers in here tonight.  Come back when you have a valid form of ID."

On rare occasions, we'll call the cops (or the PA Liquor Control enforcement: PLCE) and have them come verify the identity.  I've done this roughly 40 times in my life and only been wrong once.  I always tell them at that point, "You're welcome to stay here.  If I'm wrong, your first drink is on me, but if I'm right, you're going to end up arrested.  I'd recommend you not being here when the cop arrives if this isn't you; they won't be able to track you down and arrest you..."  Surprisingly, about half stayed, thinking they would bluff it out.

Also, bars (in PA) are allowed to confiscate your IDs if they think they are fake.  We get that argument a lot of "I paid for that!  You're stealing!" or "That's my ID.  I can't drive without it" or even "Ok, you got me, that's my brother's.  He'll kill me if I don't bring it back!".  Unfortunately for them, bouncers are paid bounties for fake IDs (usually $25-$50 per ID) for eliminating potential risk in the bar.  Fines can be up to $1000/drink served to an underage patron for everyone in the liability chain (bouncer, bartender, waitress, manager, and even the owner).  We are supposed to turn them into the PLCE or local police "in a timely fashion" (usually at the start of each week) and they are responsible for returning the real ones (if they think it was in error instead of someone else using it).  Most of the time, they let the bar keep a bunch of the fakes to use for training new bouncers.

IamTomJoad: JuggleGeek: I suspect the doorman at most bars doesn't actually care, as long as the quality is high enough to not be obvious.  It's unlikely anyone will get caught after that, and if they have a decent quality fake, it gets him off the hook.

Most people who get caught selling to minors in bars are setups, where the cops send in someone underage hoping they won't get carded, at most with a bad quality fake.

Or, as I have had happen to me.

They sent a 19 year old in with, what to this day I believe , was an actual ID. He walks in orders a beer and the ABC agent comes in, walks right to that guy, cards him and then starts writing tickets.

Kid gives them his real ID that says he's 19.

Swears he didn't have any other ID on him yet, when I demanded they search him they said "we don't have that authority"

If the ABC wants you shut down....they are going to shut you down.

Wash state has/had a law that no matter what your age you had to have an ID when in a bar.

Been hassled for that too.

42 year old guy had to have his wife walk down to the bar with his ID to avoid a ticket.

ATF would come into Key West, a middle aged guy with a smoking hot woman that looks like she needs to be carded but of course she would have no ID. The guy would try to pull the "come on man, look what I got going on here, she is with me etc" crap trying to get you to let her in the bar. If you did, you would immediately find out that both are ATF agents and she is only 19 or 20 right out of academy or newb state or local sheriff etc.

They usually only tried to pull this crap on us around spring break time when they knew we would be slammed and checking hundreds of ID an hour at the door during peak hours.

I did that job for so long I could look at the faces of a group of young adults walking up to the door and instantly know which ones did not have legit ID to get in the bar.

IamTomJoad: Doorman: "what's your DL number?"
Patron: "blah, blah, blah"
Doorman: "get out of here. People of age don't memorize their DL number"

In Delaware your DL was six digits, and there was no requirement to have the license in your possession while driving.  Lots of people memorized the number in case they got pulled over and had forgotten their license that day.

I don't know how it is now, but in the '80s and '90s, Delaware driver licenses looked fake even by the considerably laxer standards of the day.  They were made on those Polaroid ID machines that were popular at the time for workplace and school photo IDs.  They tended to delaminate if you got them wet, especially if you went swimming in salt water with the license in your pocket.

One of the reasons that licenses  need to be this elaborate, and people put so much effort into creating fakes, is the 21 drinking age, the highest of any country that's not majority-Muslim.  Lower the age back down to 18 or 19 already, where most other Western countries put it, and be done with it.  Especially since cheap Ubers are a thing already, and self-driving cars are just over the horizon.

It's not so much that they can't afford it as other than at the really high end, they will cheap out on everything they can get away with in order to make more money when selling said IDs.  None of the people buying them at this level are anyone to worry about power-wise.  What are they gonna do, complain to the cops that someone sold them a fake ID?  Well no shiat?  Illegal shiat is done to the necessary standard of average usefulness minus as much as they figure they can get away with.  You want a real useful fake ID?  Go talk to the people that charge thousands, not hundreds.  The hundreds goon is cutting every corner they can to make a few extra bucks, guaranteed

Lower the drinking age, increase the DUI penalty.

If you get a third, every car you own or are insured under ( even work vehicles ) gets forfeited to the state including content.

On top of that If you are an emergency responder, you lose your job & must pay for the hiring & training of your replacement.

I've gone out so many times with friends who forgot their IDs. Is it really that common to not put your ID in your wallet? I never think about whether I have my ID because I never leave the house without my wallet. I just have no perspective on what that life is like.

qlenfg: Yes, children -- the drinking age was lower back then.

I think it should be lower now.  Making the drinking age higher doesn't keep kids from drinking, they just usually have to drink someplace where adults aren't around, and that's not good for anyone.

I was legal at 18 and didn't get caught in it.  A friend of mine who was a year or two younger was legal at 18 - then they changed it to 19 and she was illegal again.  Then she turned 19 and was legal again - then they changed it to 21, and she was illegal again.  Really sucked for her.  Of course, it didn't keep her from drinking, just from going to bars.  And in our area, there were dancehalls that sold beer only, and you could bring a bottle of hard liquor in, just had to buy setups (mixers, soda, ice) from the dancehall.  Those places didn't have an age limit, anyone could come in, even young kids. (The young ones were there with family.)  And as long as you didn't get stupid, they didn't do much to stop the underage ones from drinking.

New Jersey?  That's where I spent my yut and when my first license expired at age 20, I had that option.  I opted for one with a photo knowing I'd need it as proof of age when I turned 21 and could drink legally.  Bouncers really gave the hairy eyeball to non-photo NJ licenses.

Bought a stainless steel Ruger Mini-14 along with a 30 shot magazine a 1000 rounds of reloaded .223 and 200 rounds of 5.57 (referring to the amount of powder) among other things, in an Enfield CT. gun store with a fake ID. Went next door to the liquor store and tried to buy two quarts of Budweiser. The got a dog out and called the police on me for the fake ID.

//paid $100 fine and was told I didn't have to show up for court
//took the Mini-14 along with 1400 rounds and all the stuff I bought 2400 miles from CT to St. Thomas in the USVI
//think I can say I brought enough explosives aboard a commercial jet liner to blow it up, with 1400 rounds?
