Flying cars!

Batteries incorporated into the car frames, for safety!

Cars that won't catch fire!

We are so selfish. Every day, we want something different from GM.

My 06 ion has 200k miles on its 2nd engine.
Ok, as an R title, it has some idiosyncracies, but I just can't kill it.
Heat, a.c. handling, even on ice and drifts, that little thing could stunt in a 007 movie.
I've replaced broken body panels, and bough 4 cases of rattle can paint to ensue it looks newish, not pasted.
I got it for 3k as a temp car when I had my 02 Forester rebuilt.
But it is my daily driver till it drops.
Subaru gets a maintenance drive, but will be my classic for retirement.

Saturn, really? That's not even the best brand GM has killed. We need to arrange a protest to bring back Saab.

I had one of the first SL2 models. I still have  a picture somewhere with everyone from the dealership cheering. I drove it for decades. It never looked dated. The transmission finally went at 290,000 miles. I miss you, Ol' Beigey.

I did like Saabs. GM ruined the car when they acquired the brand.

You've never owned one. There are plenty out there with 200k+ miles out there, even some over 500k and they just won't die. Good on gas, plastic body panels don't rust.
I see plenty of Saturn's still driving, but I don't know the last time I saw a Saab.

We drove our Saturn for 16 years. Never had a major repair. Then, someone on their cell phone blew through a red light and T-boned the car. Amazingly I wasn't hurt -- physically -- but I was a shattered husk of a man. That car had toured the West, had taken my wife all over the state for years, had passed down to the kids through their high school years, and had finally descended to me. The low man on the totem pole. Upkeep was spit. Durability was a given. Yes, someone had backed out of their parking space without looking and had knocked a hole in its fiber glass body, but I was in a forgiving mood that day and didn't make a deal out of it. What's a hole between friends? Or even in this case, strangers? I hate cars, but I loved that Saturn.

Saturn would have been a natural EV brand. Imagine a lineup of Bolt and Volt, with estate versions of each.

First Saturn was a lemon. Would just stop running while going down the road. They couldn't fix it after multiple tries and refused to switch it out for another, the f*ckers. Took lawyers to get my money back.

Second one's still going (gave it to my kids' former babysitter). It's a 2002 that I bought new in 2003, only 200 showroom miles on it then. Now it's somewhere above 100k.

Third one needs a few things, but goes anyway (2007 Aura).

They probably killed the brand because when the damn things work, they work forever, like Volvos. No need to buy another car if they're still being driven.

And they're very much sought after. You can't find the parts in junkyards because the cars are still on the road.

Parts got expensive and hard to find for the pre-GM Saab models. Like, $800 for a new muffler.

I was a teenager when Saturns first came out. I was driving to work in my Dad's 70-something Buick land yacht, and it was sleeting/snowing. Stopped at a light, and a Saturn behind me couldn't stop on the ice and ran into my back bumper. The Saturn was totaled. The Buick? The bottom right leg of the "k" in the "Buick" above the bumper pinged off and there was a streak of paint from the Saturn on the chrome.

Never considered one after that.

Great cars. GM just could not handle the idea that a company that could be successful without the olde GM senior groupthink that serves as their oxygen.

So they killed it.

2021-07-24 11:06:49 AM
Gen 2 Saturns were Opels.  That's what killed it, same a Saab becoming rebadged Pontiacs.  Edmo is exactly correct.

Ford managed to fix what ailed Jaguar, but couldn't keep it. I forget if they're now Indian or Chinese.

2021-07-24 11:29:12 AM
I've owned several Saturns and I've been happy with them... But GM should have never turned it into a rebadging line. Saturn could have been focused on 5 years into the future concepts for the whole company like hybirds and EVs (remember the EV1?)

They'd bring back Pontiac before they bring back Saturn.

Add in an EV Light SUV called the Titan and they could have been minting money.

/I think some other automaker has a big ass-truck called the 'Titan' now anyway

My dad had a 1993 SL. Had some odd and neat things. For some reason it didn't have a passenger side mirror. The automatic seatbelts were cool. Cruise control was installed at a later date. He gave it to my sister in 2004. I think she traded it in a few years later.

Is fark becoming a propaganda/marketing website or something?  The Saturns I know are those crappy vehicles shoddily designed to the extent that other car manufacturers laughed when they were introduced.

During the late 80s I was in my 1972 dodge dart stopped behind a car trying to make a left turn, some kids in a parent's BMW wasn't paying attention and crashed into the back of my car pushing stuff into their passenger compartment. My car suffered no visible damage and the responding officer asked if my car was involved in the accident or stopped to help out.

The people in the accompanying video look exactly how I'd expect people who like Saturns to look.

That is to say, stupid.

Particularly the one guy who shouted "I WANT MY KIDS TO DRIVE A SATURN!!!"

Dipshiat, you can still buy your kids a Saturn. Just go down to the junkyard and pick one out from the piles and piles of derelict Saturns that inevitably ended up there.

/I also love how only one guy in the crowd raised his hand when the reporter asked who actually drives a Saturn.

No, they killed it because nobody besides fleets were buying them at the end. Same deal with Pontiac. GM was too bloated to continue as they were, so they trimmed the crap nobody wanted anyway.
