I'd ont know about anyone else, but I know that song from a day camp many decades ago.  Seems they want to copyright a remix of the birthday song.

Yeah, I remember a more violent version from when I was in middle school in the late 80s, in which swimmers eventually get eaten by the daddy shark.

Here's a much more interesting article whereby I have learned that a Korean corporation want copyright to work both ways, and apparently successfully argued that in court.

This just makes me hate copywrite law even more.

Baby Shark (like most modern songs) is actually an adaptation of early 9th century Gregorian chants.

/probably

Sexist, actually. The dance clearly shows the daddy shark as bigger when female sharks are actually the larger sex in sharks.

Yeah, I don't get this at all. Pinkfong's version is so close to Only's that they themselves have literally mistaken his version for theirs when they've heard it. I don't understand how that's not a crystal-clear case of plagiarism, and it's offensive that they'd try to sue over that as if their later version has more rights to exist than his.

Copyright laws aren't the same world over. But even if they were you have to prove you "created" the work in order for you to hold the copyright on it.  Being the first to record it isn't enough.

whereisian:

Copyright on compositions/writings/design should last ten years.

The right to license the original work should be owned by the creator and the lifetime any heirs listed in their will.

And corporations are not people.

If you haven't figured out how to make money off your stuff in ten years than it's on you.

Also real estate developers should only have five years from the start of the project breaking ground to sell the parcels. If your development is taking too long to sell than you're not deserving to be in that business.

Everything needs a deadline.

From what I've read he was suing because he had arranged a version that had removed the violence and was specifically aimed at very young children and felt that they had based their version on his rather than the "original" version.
