Coffee soda isn't bad. There are some Asian countries that do it well.

The beverage in the article, though? I'm wracking my brain to figure out how this could be appealing at all.

It was this one, specifically. Disgusting. I couldn't finish it, and I consider myself an Epicurean.

Yeah, no. I didn't even notice the vanilla cream at first. Who thought that flavor combination would be a good idea?

It tasted most like a fermenting cola, a crossed between Coke and kombucha in the most unappetizing way. I'll stick with plain cold brew, I drink Chameleon Cold Brew right out of the bottle.

Back in Boy Scouts, some of the older kids invented a drink they called "Pud Duck". It was Tang made with coffee. Every bit as bad as you can imagine.

These days though, I find that mixing a teaspoon of instant coffee into the orange-flavor-Metamucil-store-brand-equivalent improves both and keeps things regular.

Extracting espresso over ~3oz of cold San Pellegrino Chinotto (their bitter orange sparkling beverage) in a rocks glass is insanely good for fans of bitter things. If you frequent a quality coffee shop that sells Chinotto, ask their best barista if they've tried this and if not would they try it with you.

That recipe is awfully fancy, all you really need is this, and a Soda Stream to carbonate it.

Flincher: Just drink a coke

I have some bottles of flavoring -- strawberry, raspberry, etc -- and add them to coke. A raspberry coke is a great taste, and no commercial vendor sells one. Strawberry coke was a disappointment. As was strawberry lemonade. So, I may just have to chuck that whole bottle. But some of these experiments have worked.

I enjoy these Flintstone push-up cocktails, my Google-fu is lacking this AM:
Blend;
Orange juice
Ice
Vanilla coffee creamer
Vanilla extract
Vodak or grain alcohol

Instant coffee or coffee ice cubes might be a nice addition, otherwise, they taste just like Flintstone's push-ups

In Germany, many restaurants will sell 'spezi', which is a blend of citrus and cola.   Usually either orange soda and cola or lemonade and cola, in equal portions.

I regularly make it when I'm at a place that lets you operate the soda fountain (7-11, some fast food restaurants, etc)

The Black Forest restaurant in Harrisonburg, VA had it on their menu (they did Fanta and Coke), but they didn't survive 2020.

In Germany, there is also Mezzo-Mix which is basically a Spezi pre-made.

I can often get close to it by adding just a splash or so of Fanta Orange before putting coke into a cup. Don't try a 50:50 ratio. It's too sweet. Just need a quick infusion of the orange flavor.

Germans also do "Colabier" and yes, its exactly what you think. And honestly, it's not that bad.

They probably use decent cola and certainly use good beer. I knew a girl who used to mix Diet Pepsi with crappy American light beer. And honestly, it was that bad

I think orange and coffee is just one of those combinations I'll never be able to understand, like chocolate and bacon, or french fries and shakes, or ketchup and mac & cheese.

The thing to remember is that Coke is largely a citrus (lemon, lime, some orange), cinnamon, and vanilla. The dark color is a little bit deceiving. So look at the food pairing sites for flavors that either pair with one or more of these. Beyond that it gets into complicated food-sciencery.

If you like coffee try squeezing orange peel into it. The orange oils work surprisingly well. If you also want to cut the bitterness of the coffee and the citrus oils add cream, and you're close to a Borgia.

It's just Coke. But most European countries it's made with sugar and not HFCS, so that probably helps.

But spot on about good beer.

Now I'm nostalgic. Maybe I'll pick up a bottle of Mexican Coke and a decent pilsner and make one.

Fine, you scoff. With one household appliance I have distilled water, sous vide, and finally, liquor on my food stamps. Digital technology is fun.

nahsorries, wasn't scoffing, just a stupid ancient Firefly joke/bit.

I've actually always wanted one of those, may be time for me to look again... back in the day I did the plastic bucket + aquarium heater + turboyeast thing, or even on Oceanographic ships (alcohol verboten) we simply hacked up the covfefe maker a little bit.

/anything's a still, if you're brave enough

The second outlet is inverse and plugs the top fan unit into the base. Interestingly, this 'water purifier' comes factory set to 95 degrees C. (below the temp of boiling water), but I'm sure the have no idea what you're doing with it
