Team cars carry spare parts and, indeed, spare bikes.

I think what you're asking about "pulling riders" is when they tuck in to get back on the bunch... I guess it carries over to the Olympics but, generally, they are helping riders who fall back for supplies or medical care. You're not allowed to draft behind your own team car but it's pretty accepted that other teams help each other out because  these guys (that fall back and bring bottles up) aren't really going to compete for the win and they are really doing the most work... also guys that have mechanical probs (even if they may win) get a helping hand to catch back on as well.


I just don't get it. Start with a bike. End with a bike. Are these bikes that shiatty they can't be ridden for 7 hours?
Carry a tire kit if you need to.
I just don't get it.

That's not until at least the half way point... I mean, I forget where but it's unlikely that people will start falling off the back until the very end and riders of all nations in the autobus will help each other beat the time cut.


Man, I hope so, that seems cruel to give a DNF if you make it up multiple climbs and want to finish. What'd be the harm in a terrible time. I mean they had people finishing 2 minutes back in a 8 minute rowing race.

Nah, swapping to another bike or a quick wheel change is what they want. That takes seconds. A tire kit takes minutes.

Frames are carbon fiber and very stiff. The frames can crack on rough roads. Normally the front fork will crack. High speed and rough roads don't mix.

No, time cuts are a variable percentage of the winners time based on a day's stage. Even in the tour.

That's what I'm saying. If it's a competition make it a competition. Make it fun for the spectators.

Some of the best golfing matches have been played with only one club. The best one I ever saw was six players using the SAME club.  They weren't professional matches... but they were fun for the SPECTATOR.

TdF always has weird rules for everything. I always took it that rule of thumb was +30 mins from peloton.

I had a 10 speed I took on bike trails in the 70's. It wasn't made from carbon fiber. It never broke.
I just don't get it.

Frame made was from steel. Steel is malleable.

Carbon fiber and titanium are significantly lighter than steel and aluminum. Cycling has a huge focus on weight.

If these bikes all broke all the time I think you'd have heard some pretty large consumer outcry. A Steel bike is as durable as a carbon bike is as durable as an aluminum bike is as durable as a titanium bike.

Because you can give guys a new one if it breaks because it affords the fastest and lightest frame

Yes, road racing IS JRA, albeit a bit faster.

How many bikes have you broken? Are you a dirt jumper or a BMX rider? Maybe downhill MTB? Monoe of those? Then You probably have a warranty issue. Bike frames don't just break.

Yes I mentioned earlier that the peloton is just off for a ride in the country, but this is obviously not all road racing.

Theoretically you could bet on the first car across the finish line at every UCI race... prolly low odds because it'll always be the Commissar.

Hey, Fernando Alonso is an avid cyclist. Also, I ran into Jenson Button while riding near Nice France. A lot of motor racers train on a bike.
