So, charge money for the vaccine so people will fight over it?

I like it.

They don't provide a service.  They inject themselves between the service and the customers and forcibly take a cut off the top. Scalping.

Third-party sellers took advantage of major delays at passport offices across the country because of COVID-19-related closures and staff reductions. They use bots - automated programs - to snatch up appointments, according to the State Department.

Cyber crimesof this sort you wouldn't expect. Gawd people are awful. At the root I blame the inventor of the internet and pants himself, Al Gore. /s

If you're in a rush, just use a passport service. They will make sure all your paperwork is in order, and then hand walk the paperwork to the office. It's not free, but it's fast.

1. Require applicants to give their legal name when booking an appointment.
2. Require applicants to present photo ID upon arrival.
3. Require applicant names and photo ID to match.
4. No more scalpers.

It works for the airlines.

Some years ago, I had to get a visa to Russia in a hurry, for an art show, and they only allow you to apply in person in like five cities. I hired a service and got my passport back with the visa the day before the flight.

You'd think this would have already been a non-existent issue.

Person A with a name "John Smith" books a passport appointment.
Person B with a name "Eddie Johnson" shows up for the appointment.

Either Eddie gets told he doesn't have an appointment and sent out the door, or if they find out the appointment slot was saved by John and given to Eddie... Eddie still gets told he doesn't have an appointment and is sent out the door.

Why would the State Department even consider seeing anyone who is not the person who registered the appointment?

You're being fancier than you need to.  This is about passports--the gold standard of ID.  Simply require that the named person be one of the applicants at the appointment.

It's like how the lotteries are handled for many popular hiking destinations--permits have one or more names and a group size--and the permit is only valid if someone named on it is part of the group.  (The lotteries aren't about money, there's a minimal application fee.  It's about fairly distributing the permits amongst the applicants.)

Loren: The lotteries aren't about money, there's a minimal application fee.

Start making the lottery fee $1,000 that is refundable only if the person making the reservation shows up for the appointment.

It's pure rent-seeking behavior that adds no value.  I would not mind too much if the punishment for scalping tickets was an actual scalping.

Yes, only people who have an extra $1,000 they can give up for a few weeks are entitled to a government service. It's in the Constitution.

More accurately, passport services are not in the Constitution and thus are not a right.

Expect the US Supreme Court ruled in Kent vs Dulles that US citizens had Freedom to Travel in the Constitution via the 5th amendment and that denial of passport services was an infringement on that right stating

The Court concluded that although the issuance of a passport carries some implication of intention to extend the bearer diplomatic protection, its crucial function is control over exit and that the right of exit is a personal right included within the word "liberty" as used in the Fifth Amendment. It found that when that power is delegated, the standards must be adequate to pass scrutiny by the accepted tests and that where activities or enjoyment natural and often necessary to the wellbeing of an American citizen, such as travel, are involved, the Court will construe narrowly all delegated powers that curtail or dilute them.

So contrary to your opinion ,it is in the Constitution. It is nice to know you believe in a world where the government should charge punitive fees for taxpayer funded services to restrict who can travel. Such a pro-freedom and small government stance.

The correct response to anyone named Ratner defending scalpers is to remind them that a scalper raped his 15 year old girlfriend who looks like Jennifer Jason Leigh, then had to be begged to pay for half of the abortion which came from the rape. He then did not pay and did not give the pregnant girlfriend a ride to the clinic.

That is what a scalper does.

And I can't believe anyone would forgive someone after that.

I've been trying to get a PS5 for months. I even try to buy one the second they go on sale online, only to find them removed from my cart by the time I'm putting in my shipping info.
But some asshat on ebay right now has a stack of 12 of them for sale for $1100 each.
Stores aren't allowed to engage in gouging, it's a crime. But when a person steps in between the business and customer to gouge for themselves, apparently that's just good business.

And this is why I couldn't just wander into a Target and buy a NES classic as a cheap impulse buy for like a year- some shiatweasels decided they could scalp them for more. All it meant was that I chose not to get one until it showed up while I was shopping for other things. What a dick move to create artificial scarcity.

Weird.  In Monmouth County, NJ. I made an appointment Thursday night for a Friday afternoon slot. Three passports for the wife and kids, pictures, etc. in and out in less than an hour at a small local post office. "Expedited" service was an extra $50 each or so.  If by "expedited" they mean 12 weeks.

Only for essentials, during emergencies. A PS5 is not essential.

MSRP is just a suggestion. Stores could raise the price if they wish.

Which is why they should do it like the hiking lotteries--everyone who wants one puts in a request, the requests are granted by a random pick.  Try to apply more than once and all your applications go in the trash.  (Although in some cases you can submit one application that involves alternate dates.  If you don't win on the first date you're in the drawing for the next, up through however many dates you are allowed.)  Names don't match, your permit isn't valid.

(However, in some cases it can be gamed to some degree as you're not always required to list everyone in the group.)
