Being vaccinated should have been a requirement of both entry intro country, and for competing in the Olympics. Shame on both Japan and the IOC for their spinelessness.

"My reason behind it is, for one, it was kind of a last moment, I didn't want to put anything in my body that I didn't know how I would potentially react to," he said.

"As an athlete on the elite level, everything we do is very calculated and understood. For me, in the training cycle, especially leading up to trials, I didn't want to risk any days out. There were periods where you take a vaccine, you have to deal with some days off."

Oh, so he's concerned about it right now in relation to performance and the trials.  As a healthy young person, there is a 99.9999999% chance that you'll be completely fine, but I guess that's consistent.

Andrew said he has no plans to be vaccinated in the future.

Oh, so you're just an antivaxxer, and all that stuff you said about training was bullshiat.  What a fine representative of America.  Maybe he can hang with Lochte when this is all said and done.  You can found a thinktank to study whether round blocks go into round holes or square holes.

"We feel very safe and protected knowing that we're minimizing risk as much as possible," he said, citing daily testing during the Olympics.

Population vaccination rate in Japan is very low. Like really low, like 8%.

the unabomber was right: So he will still be allowed to compete but smoking weed gets you disqualified.

Disqualified by the Olympics, or by the US Olympic committee?

See, I would think every nation would approve of other nation's athletes inhaling smoke into their lungs (of any sort) and using a drug that has been known to make people neglect important appointments, but disapprove of their own athletes doing so.

I understand not wanting to risk side effects shortly before competing

Which is why he should have been vaccinated a couple months ago

This gymanst was vaccinated and tested positive for COVID-19:

https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/19/sport/us-gymnast-covid-19-positive-test/index.html

...which again has me wondering if some COVID tests might be "fooled" by the vaccine.  I mean, if the vaccine is doing it's job, you are producing antibodies to the virus.

There was an incident many years ago where farmers in the US were refusing to vaccinate their livestock against some easily spread disease, because if they did, their livestock would "test positive" for the disease and be unsellable.  Meanwhile the actual disease spread to more and more farms, unhindered by vaccination...

It's up to 22% or so now, but still quite low.  Not sure why the Japanese government is still that far behind.

None of the vaccines are 100% effective.

Seriously dude, it's one farkin day of being in a malaise and then you're back to normal.  You could have done that months ago.

It's not like he couldn't have gone and gotten it at any time in the last few months, too.  There is no valid "last moment" excuse in the United States.

Unless, of course, it will enhance my performance and hopefully not get detected.

My wife is throwing away vaccines now because people aren't showing up and getting innoculated.  It's not like you have to sell your first born and get one.

This vaccine isn't a magical shield that repels virus particles from entering your body, it's instructions on how to fight it. There is no reason why the virus can't get inside you, and thus trigger a positive test. But since your body has a head start on how to fight it, the infection should be shorter, less damaging, and (because of those last two points) less likely to transmit to others.

I think Geotpf said that as a mundane explanation for why she tested positive, as opposed to my biochemical conspiracy theory.

Maybe because it should have been cancelled just like concert tours. But don't let the 45,000 new cases a day fool you in the States. It's basically over because Disney is open, sportsball is being played and we have Nascar every weekend.
