Hey UK:

Seriously, I expect NI to leave the UK and join with the Republic of Ireland within the next twenty years, when enough people have grown up with easy and open access to the nation on their shores than the nation they have to show their passport to in order to visit.

I proposed this once not long after the referendum and got so many "ZOMG IT'LL START TERRORISM" responses. Way, way more than the "NI joins Scotland and leaves the rest of the lot" idea.

So I'm gonna be curious if... attitudes toward that have changed now that Brexit is a thing and not a pipe dream

Of course I think the Scotland proposal is DOA because of petroleum, and England isn't about to let go of that cash cow.

Boris Johnson's real career was as a columnist who specialized in stirring things up. Columnists are seldom expected to notice or care what happens once things are stirred up, they just move on to the next thing that will stir people up.

Like some people (I won't lie, a lot of people) who have been elected here in the States, he is constitutionally unsuited for responsible governing. Yet he got elected to govern. Good job, y'all. Enjoy that.

British Sovereignty, it's what's for the EU's dinner.

The "United Kingdom" accepts the fact that the EU has put a border inside their territorial waters. Hell, there are literally parts of land that are less than 12 nautical miles from each other (and definitely less than 24 nautical miles).

Schadenfreude. Pure Schadenfreude.

/just Scotland and Wales left you imperialist pricks

The dumbest part is that this was all BoJo's idea. Theresa May had this type of arrangement agreed as a "backstop" - a worst-case scenario that would only come into force if both sides failed to negotiate a more comprehensive deal. BoJo tore all that up and made it the default and sold it as something completely different.

Oh UK, this is how you get a referendum on Northern Ireland seceding. Ireland wouldn't say it out loud, but they want that. The EU wouldn't say it out loud but they want that. You don't want that.

Do.
It.

I dare you.

I think it's more likely for NI to join the EU as a separate country than unify with the rest of Ireland. Too much risk of violence with unification, and joining the EU gets you 99% of what you would want from unification anyway.

Brexit is just continually watching a slow motion railcart trundle down to a missing bridge.

"We'll never hit that cliff! We'll think of something! I'm confident it won't happen! Brexit means Brexit!"

And then they do nothing. Absolutely nothing. And the cart falls off the cliff.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Does anybody else notice? Every single thing we said will happen with brexit, especially the nastiness involving the NI border has come true. Because figuring out how to circumvent the good friday agreement was impossible.

Farking idiots. And no one seems to notice or care. I feel bad for the UK. A case study in getting what the majority of idiots deserves.

I think it largely depends on how disillusioned those that are loyal to the crown or union remain facing increased difficulty in simply dealing with the rest of the UK, and how many in that group decide to just move to Great Britain.

Best Ireland would lose the NHS in joining the ROI, which is a big negative for many there.  On the other hand if the ROI and EU would agree to a stimulus package to modernize Best Ireland, they should take it.

I don't think it will be let go, that would be an embarrassment. And that's what Brexit was about -- all of this is worth it because the 'humiliation' would be over. And given the notorious classism of the UK, you can bet poor people getting shot, beat, or harassed by police when demonstrating will be absolutely worth it to save face, especially minorities who are lower on the tier than middle class white English. And no pol with a career is going to want to be remembered for losing territory, they're playing to the middle class white English.

It's always the same old shiat. The cost will come in blood, the alienation of internal factions, increased stress on the regional economy, and people growing up knowing there's no hope if they stay home. This bullcrap already ate a future generation, in addition to taking a bite out of the present generation's hopes and dreams.

'Stigginit' isn't specific to the New World. That's not even getting into several centuries of bad blood, a lot of crazies who got into power and are still in power on that bad blood, and the Protestant population in NI not wanting to be a sudden, irrevocable minority in a predominantly Catholic country. This has nothing to do with what's sensible or efficient or effective. Be careful on public transit in future.

Cameron has yet to face repercussions for his gamble. He wanted to end up with a vote of confidence because he didn't think Brexit would pass, but by putting it up for a vote, he gave Brexit legitimacy.

So you're not familiar with the history of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland that was going on since the 16th century, which was caused by British colonization of that region. Read a goddamn book.

Responsibilities for the MHS are already devolved. With the Tories doing their best to destroy it the advantages of being part of Little Britain's health system are fading. And it's not like Ireland couldn't take the tax money and use it to expand their healthcare to include NI

The best part is that the EU signs all look the same with the red circle. So if you go onto the continent you'll see that same sign with a 130 in the middle and then get yourself into some real trouble.

Police Service of Northern Ireland is the newer, softer police force that was converted from the ranks of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 2001. RUC was a paramilitary police force not that dissimilar from a gendarmerie. Think full-auto SMGs and technicals.

BoJo is short for Boris Johnson.

Bare ass is a colloquialism for telling someone to fark off.

This is going worse than I expected. I expected a serious recession, a bad hangover, and a Britain several notches below where it used to be, and for a long time. I expected the Tories would eventually take a drubbing.

How naive was I? Every move Boris has made works to cement Tory power, same as the GOP in the USA. Just unbelievable bullshiat the constituencies lap up with spoons and the press is too idiotic to counter. Cementing power happens to demolish all international frameworks -- but who cares -- and has the happy side effect of making the U.K. absolutely untrustworthy as a negotiator.

Where I once thought the country would suffer, now I know it will be scorched earth, self-imposed. And it's not because the Tories are horrible about their jobs, or don't know what they're doing, but because their motives and goals are completely different from maintaining the country and even passable government. Everything about this WORKS for them. It's perfect for them. Meanwhile the country becomes a crater.
