I'm going to brag because I still can't believe this happened - I caught a 40% spin-to-win on the EVGA reservation system and got a 3080TI FTW for 900 schmekles out the door.

Saw prices the other day, so looked up my card on a whim. I bought my 5700 XT at exactly the right time early last year. I got it open-box for $330, which was a great price even at the time. Now, they're about $1200 on the used market.

Been trying to get a high-end GPU for almost a year now. My render box needs an upgrade. And hell, that would let me sell off my older cards to people who could really use them.

My last build was five years ago and that is about how often I build a new system. My 1080 still works just fine. I think I can wait another year for the next generation and better prices. If I can't get a decent card for around 600 I just won't buy.

New rig with a i9....and a pair of beat-up GTX970s that won't even SLI.
But hey--it works like a champ for everything I do, and as much as I'd like a new GPU, I'm not shelling out $1K so I can get a couple more bullet holes or shadows.

Smart would be a GPU that *doesn't* allow for mining and is gaming *only*....but that'll never happen when they can sell a $100 card for $1.5K.

The article doesn't really address the key issue.

Are the GPU chip yields so good that they aren't binning them? Is every chip on the wafer good enough to be installed in a top-tier card and run flawlessly at acceptable temperatures?

That would be pretty damn good news for Nvidia and AMD.

I bought a 2070 Super last year a little while before the 30x series came out and was a bit bummed when the specs on those looked so good.

These days I'm thinking more about flipping the 2070S and buying a nice car with the money

I went back to my Quadro K1200 because I didn't care that much for games.

Sold my used RX580 4GB a year ago for twice what I paid for it two years ago used.

No regrets.

Considering spinning up a game of Baldurs Gate 2 which my Quadro will handle swimmingly.

Yeah, my understanding (for both CPUs and GPUs) is that a lot of the lower end product is merely high end product that failed quality control at the higher clock speed and then is underclocked to a speed it works at, and this is how it's been for decades.  Is this not more-or-less correct?

No, they've just dedicated more wafers for the larger chips. The binning happens at the high end. Previously they may have 3 high end, 4 mid range, 3 low end out of ten wafers (with more chips coming out of each wafer on the latter two). Now they're 7 high end, 3 mid range.

The GA102 becomes all of these:

And they're able to recycle more faults now by producing the mining cards with no video outputs.

Nope. They produce a range of chips, then the really low end are the crappy low end chips, the better low end are the best low end chips, and the same for mid and high.

102 = top tier.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/nvidia-ga102.g930

104 = mid range.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/nvidia-ga104.g964

108 = low end
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/nvidia-gp108.g808

AMD and Intel both do the same.

Intel used to be:
Atom
Core/Xeon E3
Xeon E5/E7

But the Xeon names are changed now and more confusing. And Pentiums and Celerons cross over the first two.

AMD meanwhile does the Ryzen and they used to have dedicated APUs, but they switch up the model slightly by making chiplets now, then assembling the configs.

I picked up a cheap used 1070 ex-miner 2 years ago to update from my 970 and except for trying to dog it out on games with max settings just to see how it performs, it works perfectly fine at medium/high settings. I'd like to upgrade but GPUs have turned in to such a boondoggle that I just can't force myself to care. I'll ride this one to it's heat death and hope things have leveled out some more by then.

Similar story here.  I sold off my R280 while prices were high and switched to an AMD Zen 2 APU.  My system runs much cooler and quieter, which is nice for the summer.  All of the games I play are happy enough on the APU, so I don't see myself picking up another discrete card anytime soon.

The problem is you can't really isolate the two.  What makes a GPU awesome is its ability to manipulate matrices using parallel processors.  To the card, its not looking where the ones and zeros in matrix came from - they are just values.  That means it can determine how to render 2 space ships rotating or it can recalculate your weights on a giant neural network.   The current solution is to have the card look at the matrix coming in to see if it matches the common algorithms of specific mining programs and slow it down if it matches. However, in the arms race to mine new coins, newer and better scripts are constantly being written. The manufacturers are essentially trying to install locking hubcaps when the guys owning the cars decide to just drill them out and replace them with NASCAR ones.  Like the locking hubcaps on the nice tires slowing down the average Joe changing it but not the pit crew in Daytona, the new GPUs are going to be bought by the farmers and barely make a blip on their speed.

Ive been running the same processor since 2013 with DDR3... i rather upgrade that than upgrade my GPU.

Maybe next generation... with DDR5 and 16/32 cores would be quite the upgrade from 4/8 cores DDR3.

Nothing like major bitcoin mining players getting shut down in an entire country to free up the supply of GPUs and add to the used market.  Then there's these folks' solution.

The rumor mill is currently floating the claim of a bunch of new mid-range GPUs hitting the market second week of August with enough supply to stock your friendly local brick and mortar shops. Seems like maybe the current generation of consoles is finally saturating demand so that chip fabs can use some of that capacity to produce more GPUs?

The neat thing is nvidia actually addressed that. The current 3xxx cards being made now are setup to be deliberately bad at doing hash work.

It has been many years since Bitcoin mining used GPUs. It's all custom chips these days. The price of Bitcoin does tend to control the price of the other cryptocurrencies but there's no direct link between it and the GPU shortage.

GTX570 with a 10yr old I7 DDR3@1600. Only upgraded to that from a 1030 because my mate was throwing out his old card.

Found a PC in the street just as good a couple of months ago (Dell I7 w DDR4@2400), so now I have two, one with the 570 and one with the 1030

Something has to give by the time BF2042 announces a beta.  EA will make sure of that even if they have to buy a bunch of cards and consoles direct from the manufacturers and stage them themselves at stores and online.  They will not take the chance that 2042 doesn't sell well purely because your average joe can't buy equipment to play their game on.

I never bought one of those but I paid about $3500 for an Amiga 4000 in the early 1990s. 25 MHz and something like 6 MB of RAM. It was a lot of money but it was just taking too long to compile C programs on an A500 (even though I had upgraded it with a second floppy drive).

Stock is starting to normalize a little bit.  A couple months ago there was nothing to be found anywhere.  Now I can get pretty much any card right now, but at a massive markup.  ATIs are pretty common and occasionally close to MSRP.  Nvidias, not so much.

Anyways, things are slowly getting better.

Pfff... philistine... Back then I was rocking a 24" CRT Trinitron I got at like 1/2 price.  Customer paid for part of it preorder then changed their mind due to going out of business.  I paid the difference and took it home.  Had to build an extra support on my cheapy desk to support the huge weight of that thing.
