Except you now gave enough details to the internet (re: you, the wreck & injuries) that we'd all be able to figure out who the persons involved were.  If we cared.

Sounds like the husband was really shiatty and was driving drunk when the accident happened. You don't have to feel bad but... Crying tears of joy your so happy, eh probably got some issues you should talk to someone about.

Sounds like the whole cheating and divorce is pretty recent... I'd be more worried of somebody who didn't feel at least a little bit of joy from their misery

Also, you dodged a bullet because if you hadn't found out about the cheating and got a divorce, it could well have been you in the passenger seat when he decided to drive drunk

I wonder how Danny would answer this question?

I understand LW's emotional response. Karma can be a biatch and a joy. As long as she makes no public comment, she should be OK in time. Yeah, somewhere down the line she'll want to work out her anger. At the time of the letter (2016), it wasn't that time.

CSB time:

My MIL died back in 2008, and a year and a half later, my FIL married her replacement. MY MIL was awesome, but this lady is a self centered piece of shiat. As an example, my BIL and his wife live maybe an hour away from my FIL, but if their kid EVER wants to see his grandfather, my BIL has to drive down, no matter what. The excuse will be that they can't drink and then drive home. She can't give up her farking wine for a single night. This will be the case when we visit AZ in October. We're staying in an AirBNB because we're bringing down the whole clan, and even though we're right in the middle of both places, we'll have to drive to them.

Anyway, now that I've set up how selfish and rude she is, I'll move on to the story. One day, she posts that she is sitting in the car waiting for my FIL to come out of a doctor's appointment(Not sure why she wasn't at least in the waiting room) and that she was "counting fatties and skinnines". I pointed out that it was pretty rude to post publicly about people's weight issues, especially given that we have some overweight people in the family. She had a friend that actually told me that it shouldn't matter, she didn't "say it out loud to anyone". I pointed out that posting on the internet is the very definition of "saying it out loud". Her response? She and my FIL unfriended me. I mean, I don't care that they unfriended me, the point is that we're family and that's some backhanded shiat to do to family. Hell, she didn't even send a request when I got cancer and used FB to update everyone. My FIL did, which is good, but this selfish catty biatch didn't.

As the Chris Rock quote upthread says, it's not right but I understand.
She should talk to a professional therapist about this to process it - it's a therapists job to be an independent ear without judgement, and they can listen to things that you couldn't tell your family.

And regarding traumatic former relationships, either ex-partners or family members or former friends, you know you are free of their influence when you hear something good or bad about them and you don't feel anything about it. You are free of the toxic relationship when the other person stops mattering to you.

I mean, I get what you're saying here, but there's miles and miles of difference between "I support a woman's right to abortion" and "Hey guys! Check this out! This woman has lost her baby! Fark YEAH!". Nobody is cheering the abortion numbers outside of the clinics. And no, it's not because they're afraid of how the optics will work. No, it's because those biatch and you are the only people who farking CHEER when someone dies.

Seriously, a lot of people around here need to learn how nuance works. The world is not actually black and white, there are an infinite shades of gray. You can support abortion rights and still have a problem with this woman.

But not you. Nope, not you. You jumped right in defending her with your "It's not a life until it pops out of the vagina" bullshiat.

It's not a life if it isn't viable outside a womb.

Depending how far along she was it was probably a blob of cells, with no ability to think, had zero self awareness, and less consciousness than a dog or a cat. Actually we "put down" hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats every year which have far more sense of self than a fetus does. A fetus has the potential to become a human. That's all.

A fetus is not a pwecious widdle helpless baaayybeee.

It's a life. It's cells that are alive. Meaning that it is alive in some way. On top of that, you have people having to deal with this loss and their own injuries.

I don't know what exactly has your panties in a bunch.  Maybe you miscarried and you feel responsible.  I dunno.

The letter writer was shocked at her own reaction.  She clearly needs to talk to a professional to figure her sh*t out.  Nobody here is cheering the loss of a wanted pregnancy.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think using language like "infant" and "baby" to describe an unviable fetus works against laws which protect my sovereignty over my own body.

I don't give a fark. I used the wrong word, but people aren't using the wrong words when they're defending someone who "wept tears of joy" over literal death and dismemberment.

This isn't a discussion about abortion rights, it's a discussion about someone cheering death.

Period.

I mean, if you really think that's what it's about, then I'm not sure what you're doing contributing to a text based message board, because you truly don't know how to read.

I have a former co-worker who was an awful, awful, person.  She was bad at her job, and mean to people.

She is one of the reasons I left that job.

I heard later that she had a terrible car accident that prevented her from doing that job, possibly permanently.

The wild swings from shnaudenfrude to guilt and back were interesting to experience.
