With Delta raging across much of the US and efforts to get everyone vaccinated slowing significantly (largely due to farking morons), I'm not the least bit surprised.  We're doing pretty well vax-wise, with well over 80% having their first shot and over 60% having gotten their second (got mine 2 weeks ago, and they weren't bloody kidding that the symptoms are worse on the second dose), the last thing we need now is for a bunch of plague rats sending our numbers skyrocketing.  We're already pushing the envelope too far with our reopening plans here in Ontario, and even though vax rates are pretty good, we could still see numbers spike if we get furriners in here spreading Delta all over the damn place.  (I know it's been stressed that only fully-vaccinated people would be allowed in, but you know damn well some are going to fake their way through.)

I'd like to not see is shut down again for the fourth damn time.

We're trying to prevent the next Ted Cruz, Justin Bieber, and/or Nickelback from coming in.

However, Canada can gladly take all three back.

If Trudeau had balls, he'd be closing it back to Americans right now just because of that decision. We also want to go south and not everyone can afford flying in.

This might not end well :

1 : border is open
2 : delta crosses in a massive way in canada
3 : canada has to do another lockdown
4 : a lot of canadians will hate murica for it

What about we keep the border closed till 85%+ of canadians are double vaccinated?

You probably only have to worry about Bieber. I believe Nickelback prefers Vancouver and only does tourism in the US. Ted Cruz was a Canadian anchor baby and was really just sent home. There are more however others, like Elon Musk, Jim Cary. Mileage varies on those.

Or... until 85% of Americans are vaccinated.

Until that is reached, proof of vaccination required for entry.

Canada is still opening its border on August 9. It's just the US not allowing Canadians in.

At some level, as a fully vaccinated person, I've begun to stop being especially concerned about the unvaccinated. At this point, unless they are little kids, they are skipping it on purpose. That's on them.

Sure, I'm concerned about a new variant, but that's an inevitability that we'll tackle when it happens. I'll go get vaccinated against that, and the unvaccinated can continue fighting it in their special way.

Right now, we're only up to 70% of the total population being singly vaccinated, and there's 13% or so (the under 12 people) who won't even be eligible until October at the earliest.  Saying we'll keep the border closed means, at best, we'd be looking at reopening perhaps at the end of the year, and more realistically never, as there will almost assuredly be 15% of people who will refuse to get vaccinated under any circumstances.

Not that I'd have a problem with the end of year option, but it's important to be clear that we're not likely to hit 85% doubly vaccinated in the foreseeable future.

Besides, Delta is already here in a massive way, being behind the majority of cases currently being identified in Canada.

I generally agree with your assessment: We won't hit 85% fully vaccinated by end of summer.

Still, I think the current numbers offer more hope: Canada reached 78% with one dose, a week ago. Uptake is slowing, but more and more people are changing their minds and getting that first dose - supply and availability isn't really a problem any more. And of course, with a first dose, you can assume they'll get the second dose within roughly eight weeks tops.

While that's positive news, that's 78% of people eligible. Whereas the 85% is total population.

After months of trying to convince my vaccine hesitant (that's putting it nicely) parents to get vaccinated unsuccessfully, one of my last ditch ideas was to plan a Canadian fishing trip with my brothers and I, and invite my dad, knowing he couldn't get across the border without proof of vaccination.

I think it would kill him, now that he's retired, to miss out on something like that because of a silly conspiracy theories he apparently believes in.  I hate to put him in that position..  But fark, he is at high risk, especially with Delta, and his general attitude of "It doesn't really affect me right now, so who cares?" and "if I die from covid, I'll go to heaven, doesn't sound too bad!".

Canada reached 78% of eligible people, not of the total population, and the rate of increase has all but stopped - we're at 70% of total population, and seeing only about 0.1% of the total population a day now going for their first shot, and that rate is slowing, To get to 85% of total population, we're going to need all the under 12s to be eligible, and for them to get vaccinated at higher rates than the over 12s have.  If we do get to 85% of the overall population, it'll be barely, and a long time from now.

Honestly, Canada's vaccination rate has been really good so far compared to other nations, and I'd love for it to get up to 85% or more.  But there seem to be enough stubborn people, plus those who cannot get vaccinated, that it seems doubtful.

In a way, I think us closing the border to Canadians is for their protection, since we would likely have to prove that we're vaccinated before crossing over there.  Once Canadians come here, there's no guarantees for their health and safety.

That's my parent's stand on my sister the idiot and her nazi-sympathizing boyfriend.  Neither of those two idiots will get shots, so despite having just moved 2,000 km closer to my parents, they will likely never be allowed to visit them, because the old man is ludicrously high risk, and Mum is his caretaker.  Meanwhile, I remain under standing orders to visit them this year as soon as feasible, which best be before Xmas, or I'm not going to hear the end of it.

Normally I would just say to that: We need to start having places mandate vaccines because that's the only end for this.

On the other hand, the supposed agreement by Canada and the US (that's now apparently out the window?) required you to be vaccinated.

I've said it at least a dozen times, and I'll repeat it again: STOP PUNISHING THE VACCINATED BECAUSE OF THE UNVACCINATED.
