This is only a surprise if you haven't been following Women's International Football.

There has been a shift in power over the last decade away from the USA and towards certain European nations that have taken Women's Football seriously.

The US women were on a 44-match unbeaten streak and the won the last 2 World Cups. That's not even remotely a shift.

That said, there's a reason they play the games. With a 3-0 loss the US women need to win the rest of their games convincingly so goal differential doesn't come into play. And maybe they won't. Upsets happen.

Not really.  Women's football at the Olympics is only a 12 team tournament, meaning that 2 of the third placers still go through.  A win (by any margin) and a draw would probably be enough.

Sweden didn't have to bunker down on defense against the Americans this time.

Hunker. It's "hunker down". Hunker is a verb, bunker is a noun.

Australia is no push over. The USWNT better get their collective shiat together pronto or they're headed for 1-2-0.

The USA team used to win tournaments by a mile. The last world cup they won by inches. Literally in the case of White's goal being chalked off due to offside in the semi final. In the round of sixteen they needed two penalties to beat the Spanish. The second goal against the French had a heavy hint of handball. The Americans needed massive amounts of luck to win the last World Cup and have the unbeaten run ended much sooner.

Look at the age of the current squads for the European teams and then the American team. Top level football is only playable in your late 30's as either a keeper, sub or against amateurs. Plenty of skilled young women coming through in the other teams, not so in the USA team.

So? The shift you're alluding to may be coming, or it may not. But to declare it so in the face of two years of abject dominance by the US women after one loss is absurd.

I'm watching the match on my DVR now and the USA looked disorganized for most of what I've seen. Lots of mistakes in defense.

Rapinoe didn't start this game.  I think they are beginning the overdue transition to the younger talent.  But I think your point holds, the USWNT is likely to decline relative to the rest of the world because the rest of the world is finally beginning to care about women's soccer.  Sort of the inverse of the USMNT.

The Googles Do Nothing: Why do we suck at EVERYTHING?!?!

I wonder how the no crowds is going to change the way everything is officiated leading to more upsets and less USA and Japan (as home country) medals this time in those types of events.

I've been watching some soccer. Since there is no crowd noise all you hear are the players yelling.

Single elim?  Or round robin to a playoff?

bhcompy: Single elim?  Or round robin to a playoff?

12 teams, 3 groups of 4. Top 2 and the 2 best 3rd place teams go to a single elimination playoff.

But the USA is in the proverbial "Group of Death." After Sweden, they face New Zealand (likely the worst of the group, but not by much) and Australia (very dangerous)

I watched the recast. They lost the recast too.
