He's not a Fleming, he's British.

Been listening to Goldeneye: Where Bond Was Born on audiobook recently.  Actually pretty good for anyone interested in Flemming.

The Bond books are very typical of the 50s/60s spy novels that were churned out in abundance.  Lots of double entendres and implied sex, lots of drinking, lots of action in a fairly short format.  They were pulps; they weren't not Clancy tomes or thinking-man's spy novels like Le Carre wrote.

I've been reading the Fleming books in order for a while now, I'm almost done and although they get better towards the end, they're still not great.

On Her Majesty Secret Service was the best so far. I'm struggling to get through You Only Live Twice

Guess which crazy shiat-ass of a right wing freak of a so-called "writer" thought Fleming's pulp trash was great?

Fleming's Bond from the novels drank gin martinis. That's what makes the "shaken not stirred" stand out as you aren't supposed to shake gin as it will "bruise".

Movie Bond drank vodka martinis since Smirnoff paid for placement.

Not entirely.

Casino Royale describes the Vesper, which contains gin and vodka:

Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel.

Sorry about that. I was trying to regurgitate 20+ year old information.

I recall Fleming preferred gin and of course he wrote a lot of himself into Bond.

I'm her magestys secret service was the worst bond and bond movie by far.  Sean Connery had to come back in the next one to save the franchise.

I was talking about the book.

Though I didn't dislike the movie either.
Lazenby was just doing a Connery impression instead of making it his own.

He farking  gets married, which is so in bond. Ohmss is a blight on that franchise.

I assume you mean "un-Bond" but my guess is you haven't actually seen it.

Like I said, it was a great book.  And he gets married in the book.   And she is killed.   And it fuels his vengeance against Blofeld in each book after.

And it teaches him to "never love" again.

The Craig movies more or less replace Tracy with Vesper.
Although he was very much in love with Vesper in the book as well.

So, really, OHMSS is VERY Bond.

Now again, the movie is pretty damned good.  It's just a shame Lazenby was doing a Connery impression.

And you think Diamonds are Forever SAVED the franchise??

Yikes.

I have seen it, and it was awful. Not that diamonds are forever was particularly a good bond, more that Connery was able to save the franchise.

Let's be honest tho, there's a reason that Austin powers was able to easily lampoon the bond franchise. It's all campy and corny, the earlier the more ridiculous. They are and always have been shlock. I do love them though, not everything has to be. a Miramax sob story.

I'm sure that ohmss was a better book, but there is a reason why lazenby never played bond again.

Oh don't get me wrong.   I'm not being a  dick to you.
I agree 100%.
All Bond is goofy schlock.  And I love it (except Die Another Day, like really??  C'mon!!!)
That's why I'm reading all the books!
They're not great books.
But they're fun toilet reading.

I'm just saying in Bond movie terms, OHMSS is actually one of the better ones.

Much better than Diamonds, Octopussy, View to a Kill, most of Brosnon's films.

Only one?
That filthy traitor, Flynn was the first to come to mind, but I would absolutely believe Roger Stone or Ted Cruz.

Casino royal, Craig, is the modern one that I despise. The climax is a poker game?  Ugh, just no. Just no.

It's all good fun, and I look forward to more shlock.

I can't tell if you're messing with me in this whole thread or not?

The climax isn't a poker game.  Did you leave after the poker game?  There's a lot more after.

The worst of the Craig films is Quantum of Solace but that's just because of the writer's strike.  It's not bad.  Just doesn't feel "complete"
And I didn't like Skyfall's "Home Alone" gadget-schtick ending.  But I'm looking forward to the next one, if they ever release the damn thing!
