Were you here for the threads that proclaimed Bezos a genius for replicating 1961 technology.

He's saved the world with that flight apparently

So who will be first to claim that billionaires aren't breaking any laws, completely missing the point that the laws should be changed

Perhaps those folks who want to make America great again as in take it back to the 1950s, would best be reminded that those days were only great because there was a tax of 90% or something on the wealthy, if memory serves.  And it may not, but America was definitely never made great by wealthy people avoiding and evading paying taxes to the country that made them rich.

Fail tag is for all of us not having her as our president right now.

Biden is way better at Presidenting (and moving the Overton window) than he was at campaigning, but she was still the best choice.

/we will always have your efficient and systematic castration of Mike Bloomberg on live TV Liz.
//they cant take that from me.

Liz wasn't the best choice.  She got nothing out of supporting Biden eventually. No spot in his administration. She just gets to be a gadfly.

Biden is NOT way better at Presidenting. If anything, he has moved the Overton Window closer to the GOP position.  Unless he pushes through a serious legislative package without their support, he's shown his true colors.

Bloomberg was never a viable candidate.  Liz's takedowns of him were nothing super special.

Tulsi's takedown of Kamala was spectacular.  And we're stuck with Harris now.  Sad.

The fact we have a 3-way Billionaire space race, and none of them pay a single red cent in taxes between them is absolutely unconscionable.

The system is hard-broke, and needs a serious reset - or a rebuild.  The fact that the legislative branch has turned into a greedy corrupt parody of Red-vs-Blue is a travesty, and prevents any real reform or systemic corrections.

Any ideas that don't involve tiki-torches or idiots trying to overrun a building with zip-ties and flagpoles?

Why do people keep saying Bezos didn't pay taxes?

Everything I read suggests he paid a fairly normal 21% tax rate in most years, except for in two years when he had massive losses....which is normal for someone who is making money largely from investments.

Her big mistake is referring it to a wealth tax. She needs to do as a Republican and call it the "Reduction of Rich peoples taxes Act" (and tax the shiat out of them), they wont see it coming.

So what, we should just text them out of existence? Matching if you took away 95% of a Billionaire's money... They would only have 50 million dollars left! Barely enough for three superyachts and a extra mansion in the Hamptons to go on vacation three times a year!!!!

Sickening, the very notion.

Call it the Patriotic America First Freedom Tax Reform Act and Republicans will have no choice but to vote for it.

Yeah, I read the pro-publica article...folks keep confusing 'wealth/networth' and 'taxable income'. If we all calculated our 'true tax rate' as they call it in the last column, we would be putting our taxes paid over a denominator of our total net worth -- including houses and 401ks.  So probably 50% of americans would have similar 'true tax rates'.

I'm sure Karla Jurvetson's pawn who stayed in the primary past having any chance of winning and jussssst long enough to prevent an actual progressive presidency from becoming reality is really gonna put the screws to the fraudsters and oligarchs who run the country.

This, like the rest of her political career, is all kabuki for the sake of power; this time to scare off her inevitable primary challenger.

I had an elderly friend, and his father had been a prominent lawyer in the smallish town he lived in.  When talking about the location of a fast food restaurant nearby, he casually mentioned that his father sold off the parcel of land that restaurant sits on.  This stuck with me as later I was reading a book about B movies from the 50's and how low end directors were funding their movies with investments from doctors and the like.

This got me to thinking about how people got around those 90% tax rates on high income.  When I was young, I always heard people complaining about rich people using "loopholes" to avoid taxes.  But those loopholes were there so the money made by these people would be put to work in their communities.   My friend's father no doubt bought these tracts of land because he could either own property or give most of the money to the government.  A no brainer to be sure.  That money was invested and later used to grow the local economy.  Land, rental and retail property, small businesses, all provided a lot more than sticking all that cash in the bank or the stock market.

Was the system perfect?  Meh.  Were there problems with it that couldn't have been worked out?  Of Course.  But Ronald Reagan came along and trashed this system and we'll never put that particular genie back in the bottle, even though we desperately need to go back to this type of structure.

The country is broken at a fundamental level, and can't be fixed without major changes to the Constitution. Since the people benefiting from it being broken will never allow that, there is no solution that doesn't involve violence.

The reason the push for the wealth tax is a waste of time is because they could accomplish almost the same exact thing a thousand times more easily by raising the existing rate for long-term capital gains above a certain level of investment income, but even that isn't getting off of the ground, so this is just more empty grandstanding.

The whole thing needs to start with a legitimately high threshold. Let's say a billion dollars.

You could get some pretty serious support for wealth taxes if you stopped the silly bullshiat about taxing all capital gains as income. There are literally millions of 'thousandaires' who take advantage of capital gains rates, and as much as lower net worth people want to think we're just kissing billionaires' butts, that's why you get such pushback.

Make it actually a tax on billionaires. One that doesn't kick the moderately successful in the balls while leaving huge loopholes for the billionaires, and you'd see widespread support.

Instead, even Warren and indeed Biden talk about raising taxes on people making >$400k a year. The people who are really the problem make that in a day. They wouldn't cross the street for $400k. If they dropped $400k, the wouldn't bother to pick it up. Start actually taxing those assholes for once.
