(USA Today)   Deion Sanders walks out of press conference after being called "Deion". "You don't call Nick Saban 'Nick.' Don't call me Deion. If you call Nick 'Nick', you'll get cussed out on the spot, so don't do that to me. Treat me like Nick"   (usatoday.com) divider line

Okay Sanders.

You have the right to be called what you want, but if the guy does call Nick Saban "Nick" maybe give him more than one chance to get used to it.

The first and greatest dignity is calling someone by whatever moniker they've asked you to. If you do not comply, you do not respect that person and that's an extremely effective way to do it.

I wouldn't call the Queen just "Elizabeth"...at least to her face. I have respect for her, if not her title.

Alright. Why do you suck as an NFL coach?

Respect is earned. And it's not just a one-way street.

Deion was a legendary PLAYER. Player. He's a new coach who wants to be treated in his profession like THE top talent (who BTW is as arrogant as all getout but not even NEARLY as arrogant as Deion to pull a move like this).

He was a talking head who made money by being brash but toned down compared to the Stephen A. Bayless's of the world. He, like a lot of other ex players, slapped sports journalism (the industry) in the face. Ergo, Deion doesn't respect journalism. He's a tabloid fodder fan.

Then again, Trev Alberts is another example... and that guy is an AD now. Insane. But I doubt even he would storm off if someone called him Trev instead of AD Alberts.

Deion....most football fans don't like Nick Saban.  Do you really want to be treated like him?  (I'm not sure what the sports media thinks of Saban, TBH.)

Besides, when people say your first name, you're the first celebrity who comes to mind.  It's not like they're think about comedian and Old Spice pitchman Deon Cole...or former WR Deion Branch.

As much of an ahole reaction as it was, he does have a point.

Reporter could have said "Coach" or "Coach Prime" which is what he was asking to be called all last season, or he could have just launched into a question using no name at all.

Awfully entitled to just call people you have no relationship with by their first name.

Or maybe because my father is retired military I was raised differently.

Yes, you were raised differently.

Calling someone by their last name is dumb and coaches don't merit a special title.

Meanwhile, if someone asks Deion what he calls reporters, I'm sure his answer would be closer to "who cares? They're nobodies. I don't need to know their names" other than "sir/ma'am"...

That said, if they do call everyone else coach, call him coach. He, too, can be "random body who's getting fired within the next few years."

Local radio show Toucher and Rich had a bit where they played Deion's music album. Of course it was general riffing on how bad it was.

But one day (a Super Bowl radio row thing) one of the hosts found himself next to Deion. Rich starts asking him about his songs, but as if he's a big fan. He spits out a couple lyrics from one of the songs and Deion is like, "Come on, be respectful." Rich is like, "What? I'm talking about the lyrics you sung."

Raised to be subservient

Call people by their name and look them in their eye.

Every last one. And spit on anyone who takes umbrage

On the contrary, I find adults addressing someone as coach weird.

jaylectricity: Okay, Dick...does Dick work for you?

reminds me of a insult I have never had the opportunity to use to a jerk.

*Jerk says something*

Me: "You're right, Richard."

Jerk: "My names not Richard".

Me: "I'm sorry, do you prefer dick?"

I am conflicted.  Inferring someone is gay should not be an insult in-and-of-itself, but the person this would be directed to probably wouldn't care about micro-aggressions anyway and should trigger effectively.

Well, there's plausible deniability there. You're just calling him a dick. But the way you say it leaves him open (if he's homophobic) to get defensive about that part.

Thus proving your original hypothesis that he's a dick.

I appreciate those kinds of layers.

And I always thought that even though it started as shaming somebody for being gay, nowadays calling somebody gay is just calling them a liar. It wouldn't matter if they were gay if they were honest about it.

I don't think he's a dick per se, but just incredibly insecure about how stupid and useless he is.  Insecurity is coming off him in waves.
