Sorry Peloton, Zwift is already far more interesting.

David Brin, I think, did a neat short story with VR gear, exercise equipment, and male bonding.

I personally really enjoy VR exercise games like Beat Saber and Supernatural.  I really can't justify taking up a large section of my living room for a exercise bike though...

Not the worst business idea I've seen Peloton make.

Sorry Peleton, you want me to go big on one of your bikes, you got to go big on your games.

/Slap one of your bikes on a force feedback pogo stick and let me give bike trials/BMX a shot without taking out 3 city blocks and myself. That could be fun.

This reminds me to try the GTA bike mod again, you can use your bike and turbo trainer (like with Zwift) but in GTA V.

That's a bummer.
My poor man's peloton using another brand of bike that still shows your cadence and resistance is good enough to follow along on classes which are only $12/month vs vs $40/month on top of paying for their bike.
This might actually help keep my interest more than the same five trainers who repeat the same catch phrases all the time, like hot sweaty fembots from a weird star trek future.

That game sounds incredibly boring. I've also taken a spin class, and hated it because when I exercise the last thing I want to listen to is someone talking to me, or someone else's music. So Peloton is basically the least interesting exercise option for me.

I'm much more likely to shell out for a VR set and just play Beat Saber.

There's all kinds of ways to use a desktop computer, a remote monitor or cast it to any smart tv... Also, the investment is actually all in the smart trainer. If you aren't going to ride outside, or if you just build a trainer dedicated bike it doesn't matter if it's made of lead, it only needs a decent transmission, so it can be magnitudes cheaper, plus, you don't need a Zwift subscription for the smart trainer to work. It's all about stand alone functionality.

"wellness tourism?" "lifestyle real estate?" What the fark is wrong with you people? I have 2 outdoor bikes (a old, heavy MTB and a shiny new gravel bike) but I still like my Peloton, especially when it's 100 degrees outside.

I also don't want to schlep my bikes up the stairs to put them on a trainer for indoor rides in my workout room and then have to bring them back down for outdoor rides.

Wear out what, exactly?  It's a direct-drive flywheel with a magnetic resistance mechanism - the mechanical part of it doesn't even really require maintenance.

Why would they want to brick my device?

I dunno how you'd wear it out... sounds like you have an idea... that was just encouragement.

As far as bricking it... there are always rumors of a new pay structure around the corner, changes in subscriber tiers and glitchy updates... the main thing is they can.

The best $80 I ever spent on fitness equipment.  They really got this right.  It's addictive, fun, and I've lost 30 lbs.  I hated squats, planks, and mountain climbers.  Now I do extra squats, planks, and mountain climbers.  I'd pay another $80 for more maps, enemies, and outfits.

In the late 90's my family joined a local gym that in addition to the standard equipment, had a handful of cutting edge bikes and climbing machines with interactive games built in.

I remember the bike being particularly fun. There were few games built in, but the one I remember most was reminiscent of Rocket League. The coolest part was that the bikes were networked so you could compete against other riders next to you. My brother and I played it a bunch and I recall it being such a tough workout that you didn't even realize you were getting until the end of the game simply because you were so immersed in the gameplay. I swore that kind of stuff was going to take off. I think those machines only lasted a few years.

I've seen Beat Saber mentioned a few times here. Are people really getting a good workout with that?  It's fun, but I don't see it being very intense. Not to mention getting all sweaty with that headset on seems really uncomfortable. I did get a bit winded after playing one of the boxing games.

We got a peloton back in the winter and have no complaints so far. Aside from being away for vacation I can count on one hand the days I haven't used it. Sure, there were cheaper options but this works for us.

Combine the pedaling with one of those idle clicker games?  Each rotation of the main axle counts as 1 click, and greater resistance adds bonus clicks?

Or have it get linked to a game like Factorio, but extra pedaling provides extra power in an Accumulator (aka a Battery).  So if your base gets attacked and your Laser Turrets are consuming too much power?  Get pedaling, quick.  Or for FPS, get it linked to something like Natural Selection where the more pedaling you did, the bigger ammo clips you have to work with.  Each of these would be time spent away from the computer aiding you in the game itself.

Another idea might be where the Peloton subscription also includes access to a cloud Software service, but the cloud software service is half the price you would normally pay.  Pedaling more often would be used to reduce the price of the service.

You could even set up a multiplayer capability, where your exercise also benefits a bit, and their exercise benefits you.

The key for Peloton would be to give steady rewards for people doing their exercise.  Other programs might be used to monitor the rider's pedaling, to measure if they are having a difficult time, along with pressure sensors in the handlebars to measure pulse rate.  If the person's pulse rate gets too high, the system can override the resistance in the wheel to reduce the stress, and try to switch out the music/exercise program to something a little more calming.  The Peloton would be adjusting the routine for the rider based on the feedback from its sensors.

Lots of people use DDR for exercise, and Niantic is all about games you play while walking long distances and exploring cities IRL. VR games can be a workout without even intending to be.

So, it's not like exercising while gaming is a new idea. The main issue they're going to run into is the main issue with them period: they're insanely overpriced.

A decent DDR pad is 100 bucks - game is 50, or 0 if you use a third party software like Stepmania. Niantic games are free. Even the really expensive VR rigs like the Valve Index are no more than a grand - still way cheaper than a Peleton.

I use an Expresso all the time at the gym, it's great and no farking network connection or monthly fee required. I wouldn't mind getting one for the home, refurbished ones aren't terribly priced.
