How long until Japan tells the US: "whelp, thanks, anyway", and quietly, massively rearms including nukes?

As an anime addicted kid during the cold war, my answer would be : "never. As if."

Now? I think the Japanese would quickly and willingly arm to counter a threat against China. Regardless of Taiwan. The world has moved on.

With respect to conventional arms, that is already happening. If China keeps up this kind of rhetoric you will likely see a nuclear armed Japan and S. Korea (who just tested a submarine launched ballistic missile that makes no sense unless it is carrying a nuke)

Washington's regional allies such as South Korea, Japan and Australia could also be sucked into a conflict as would Nato forces such as the UK because the US is a member of the alliance.

The whole thing is mostly posturing, but this particular point is false. The mutual assistance article of NATO only applies to territories in the North Atlantic region. This is why the Falklands War did not trigger article 5.

Probably a bad idea since it'll give China a nice "We can commit war crimes on your soil too." excuse.

"We will use nuclear bombs first. We will use nuclear bombs continuously."

You know, screw 'em. I don't want to see the world end over this basically trivial b.s. but once you threaten to use nuclear weapons FIRST, no one has any reason not to preemptively strike. Brinksmanship doesn't work any more, there are too many trolls and dynamite monkeys willing to jiggle the table.

They're like a 1976 hijacker trying to take an airplane in a post 9/11 world. You're just asking for a beating or worse.

I have a solution on so many levels.

Step 1: Bring over all Japanese citizens (~125 million) to live in what are now U.S. red states
Step 2: (same time as Step 1) Resettle all U.S. MAGA voters over to Japan, where they can have the whole set of islands to themselves, and call it "MAGAland" or whatever
Step 3: U.S instantly becomes a technological powerhouse once again. With MAGAts gone, U.S. average IQ skyrockets
Step 4. Sushi and manga for everyone!

Arigato for listening.

China would scream like a demonically possessed deaf banshee in heat that has just won the lottery while filming the climax scene of a bad porno. China already does so for far less, using any lame excuse to advance their military movements.

Not that it would likely happen, but in an all-out nuclear war Japan's much smaller surface area is relatively easy to completely blanket with nukes, compared to China's much larger area.

China is eventually going to implode. Making nuclear threats against neighboring countries will lead to global sanctions and hasten the implosion.

The problem now is they have already stuck their metaphorical dick out there and I'm afraid that the Asian culture is not going to allow them to walk that back very easily even if they wanted to.

China's belligerence to the outside world is likely because their economy is on shaky ground and internal tensions.

It would be a nice guarantee for Japan, that is until the next version of U.S. President Trump comes along that can be bought off by Chinese interests. As we have seen, that can happen anytime.

Japan should keep U.S. forces there as long as they are willing to be there, but quietly develop nuclear defense capacity.

Japan technically has no military.  However, they've had a massive "self defense force" since the 50s, which has been performing overseas "peacekeeping" missions for  over thirty years now.

It's bullshiat.  If China nukes Japan then they deal with the fallout in like 30 minutes, and for 10000 years after.  Irradiated fish, radiation rain, etc etc.

Since it's the Sun, I now doubt that China or Japan even exist.

BeansNfranks: They really have a hardon for Taiwan, don't they.

Taiwan currently does 63% of the world's semi-conductor manufacturing.

Imagine if that were suddenly added to China's market share, and China was then able to pick and choose who they no longer to export semi-conductor's to. That would be a very persuasive bargaining chip for China.

Forget fixing road and bridges, we should be throwing wads of money at upgrading domestic technoligical industries before we are entirely at the whim of China's export decisions.

Irradiated fish?? From land being nuked? Nope.

A turnkey state is any sovereign power without a nuclear arsenal but with the resources, technology, and infrastructure to rapidly create such an arsenal.

Japan is likely a turnkey state.

After all, a nuclear bomb is just a regular bomb until the nuclear core is installed, and the nuclear core over there on that shelf next to this large, inefficient, regular bomb is just refined nuclear fuel for the nuclear reactors, of course.

The trick is "turning the key" fast enough not to lose the ability to use the newfound nuclear arsenal once nuclear war breaks out.

I've often wondered if it would take a nuclear winter to bring climate change under control at this late stage. Both are unthinkable but one scenario lets a few species survive.
