I got a ticket after using the Parking Kitty app here. I definitely paid for parking and I was angry and perplexed when I saw a ticket on my dash. Upon consulting the ticket, the cop has mis-typed my license plate, so no payment showed up.

In order to contest this, I had to pay a "bond." The bond the same price as my ticket. Six months later, the city refunded me.

You have to pay your ticket to contest it. It's f*cking ridiculous.

I'm so glad I live in a metro area where paid parking is a rarity - especially after 6pm. I don't honestly know how some of you pay that shiat day in and day out and somehow find it okay?

Because we need to find parking spaces and keeping your car in a place for more than a few hours should only be for low density areas.

the app's developer Passport, which put up a message to warn drivers not to enter special characters, like hyphens. The company is now working to disable the ability to do so.

But the DROP TABLES thing still works, right?

I think the cop looked for the wrong plate in Parking Kitty and wrote the ticket to the correct plate.

Depends. Some places can't do that. A parking ticket is sometimes a lesser offense than a traffic ticket.

That being said they can tack on fines and fees and eventually will collect.

Is it too much to expect the businesses you frequent to provide enough free parking to satisfy their demand?

How? They'll go after the guy with the wrong/mistyped license plate, which is probably a non-existent plate. How will they ever track you?

It's not uncommon that they'll refer the unpaid ticket to a collection agency and it'll potentially end up on your credit report, which can screw your ability to get jobs, housing, or whatever else.

Well, it sounds like Austin sucks just as bad as Dallas, now. Want to go out on the town after hours or on the weekend? Screw you -- be sure to feed the meter, and if you are 5 seconds late to move the car, ticket time.

Someone should go Cool Hand Luke on the parking kiosks.

Budget for parking fines. No matter how careful you are, you will get a few per year (heavily heavily dependent on the city).

Even if they make a mistake and put a ticket on your dash, it is not worth it to even fight it. Just consider it part of the parking cost and pay it.

As I recall, one of the reasons they decided to keep charging for parking after hours and on the weekends was because of how "easy and convenient" it had been made.

After they decided you didn't have to pay, they probably billed whoever owns the license plate he mistyped, assuming that matches with a legit plate #.

Around here the parking fine increases with each violation. It's five bucks the first time,10 the second, 30 the third, and on like that. But, it's free after 5pm.

Not worth fighting it in the monetary sense, but some people will spend more for justice. I have a friend, with a doctorate in chemistry, who is as competitive as Michael Jordan. He got a parking ticket for expired meter, and insisted that he was ticketed before his two hours were up. He fought that ticket to the point that he forced the city to pull the meter and check the calibration. Sure enough, if you paid for 120 minutes, it would expire after 110. His ticket was dismissed, and I'm sure he spent WAY more in time and money than just paying the ticket would have been. But he felt vindicated, and could afford it.

I fought a parking ticket.

They said to come between 9AM-12PM on a certain date.

Obviously only paid parking near the court-house with 2 hour parking limits on road-parking. Had to park in a structure and walk 10-15 minutes.

Went there and there was a hall full of people (like 100 or so) given the same date and time. You just sit around for 2-3 hours before they call your ticket.

Is $30 worth it to take half a day of work to sit in a court house and pay $10 for parking for 4 hours in a parking structure?

One trick is to save an older parking ticket (maybe one you've paid, or not paid) and you stick that under your wiper when you park. Lazy parking enforcement come by and think someone already got you, so they don't give you another.

In only this, I'll say that Chicago has a well built system.

I mean you pay through the ass, but at least paying is easy and you don't sweat tickets, you appeal them.

Okay, our tolls are also shockingly consistent. Even with a failed pass read they check your license and apply an adjustment before they mail you to pay-up again.

While I agree, in this instance the user entered a hyphen where there was a space in their alphanumeric licence plate. That's like replacing the hyphen in your social with this: ###💩##💩####. It creates an error. Now, if she had used an underscore in place of a space I might understand.
Real plate: AAA 1111

Using a hyphen.... No.

The cop mistyped the plate number when looking it up to see if they had paid. Then when that mistake came back "not paid" the cop wrote a ticket and managed to get the plate number right that time.

Or so I'd guess.

See my comment above. It does happen, but not without extra time and money that the city is counting that you don't want to spend.

Chestertown, Maryland is dependent on tourists for its economy. They decided that to be nice to the tourists they would stop charging for parking.  The parking meters are no longer enforced, but rather than remove them, the city turned them into tip-jars.  When you go to Chestertown and visit the shops and visit the fountain and then have a good time, when you leave you can put a few coins into your parking meter.  The money collected this way is used to maintain the parks, flowers and fountain.

Chestertown is a funky place.  It's a great place to study brickwork.  A lot of the buildings are done in Flemish Bond with glazed headers and there are elaborate dentitions.  The city hall flies a Canadian Flag because they are a sister city to Chester, Ontario.  The Episcopal Church has some nice stained glass windows, one of which is a genuine Tiffany.  They have a great organ and give public recitals.

It's a time vs money balance. You could spend the time to do the research yourself and challenge the ticket. You probably have at least a 50/50 shot at success because the city prefers free income instead of protracted court battles*.  You could also hire an attorney, but that costs more than the ticket.

The question comes down to this. How much of your time are you willing to spend to contest a $25 ticket?

*If you choose to fight, motions and continuances are your best friend. Eventually, the city will give up because it is costing more money to deal with you than the fine. However, how much time did you spend to accomplish that?

You doubt there's a problem with this system... after reading an article about how the system has problems?

But yes, this app runs on the meter-reader's handheld, not tied into an automated plate reader.
