Yankee fans have their work cut out, if they want to move up to the next level: pond scum, I don't think they'll make it.

In Philly, it would have gone like something like this:

That "fan" who threw the ball has been banned from all MLB ballparks permanently

Verdugo threw a ball in the stands.  It was thrown back to him.  If he hadn't thrown the ball in the stands, no one would have thrown it back to him.  Why do these facts get you so riled up?

Besides, as a major league outfielder, shouldn't he have been able to catch the ball?

Vlad doesn't like professional ball players trying to toss gifts to young fans which will endear them to the game for life.

No, Vlad just can't believe a major league baseball player, in his team's biggest rival's stadium, is surprised a ball he threw into the stands came back to him and that caused him to throw a hissy fit.

thanks for the followup; I was hoping that would be the case, rather than just the park in question.

I ask this with all sincerity: have you ever seen a baseball game? the home team's outfielders toss third out balls into the stands on the regular. here, a visiting player did so because he was attempting to give it to a kid fan of his team. someone else got it instead, and if they wanted to throw it back then okay whatever, but only as long as they make really goddamn farking sure it isn't going to hit anyone.

The fan threw it back because it had visiting team cooties or something.

Now start ejecting and banning all those moronic Cub fans who throw back home runs.

Throwing it back was a dick move and not the problem. The problem is he hit a player with the ball, intentionally.

What proof is there that the thrower meant to hit Verdugo?  He may have just meant to throw it back in Verdugo's general direction and hit him accidentally.

However, if he did mean to hit Verdugo, the Red Sox should consider signing him.  His throw was accurate while Verdugo missed his target.

actions can have consequences. in tennis, for instance, a player hitting a ball in anger may get a warning/point penalty/fine, but if they hit an official, it's an automatic match default. doesn't matter if there was an intentional target. even if the fan wasn't purposely aiming for anyone, they have a responsibility to make sure no one's in the area before the return toss.

Earn their adoration by being good at the game, not by bribing them.
