(SoraNews24)   After Londoner mocks Domino's Japan fish and chips pizza, Tokyoite orders one, finds weirdest thing about pie isn't the fish, the chips, or the tartar sauce base, but the lemon wedges on top - quite unap-peel-ing   (soranews24.com) divider line

Initial thoughts:

Yes, eating the lemon, eve without the rind seems weird.

Second, it probably does taste alright other than that.

Third, I'd rather just have fish and chips if I wanted fish and chips. I've had a lot of themed pizza combinations that you'd think I'd also say that about but don't (Mac and cheese pizza, mashed potato pizza, cheeseburger pizza, etc). But I can't see this working better in pizza form, regardless of my mood, better than just fish and chips in a non pizza format.

While a lot of these things appear weird, what I've found is that the best thing to do is to lean into the weirdness. Especially in a place like Japan which doesn't have a great grasp of American pizza, the way to go is to just order the most Japanese thing they've got. Black squid ink pasta with mayonnaise sauce and corn toppings. Sure, it sounds wretched, but compared to whatever they think "fish and chips" is supposed to be on a pizza, it'll be heavenly.

The idea of fish and chips pizza belies a fundamental misunderstanding of what fish and chips and pizza are all about. It's a mashup for mashup's sake. They know squid and mayo and corn, so even if it sounds bizarre, it's been perfected over the years to meet the tastes of the Japanese. That's something you can trust.

In all honesty, that really was my issue with the pie. Fish and potato on bread isn't so weird, but the lemon with rind was the bridge too far.

I like to go out on a limb with foods. I have found what you say in general to be true, you want to go with what the locals eat. I think I would love the food aspect to visiting Japan, with just the whale meat alone, they seem like another planet when it comes to food.

How many bites 'til you chomp on a lemon seed?

I've never had black squid ink pasta, but I assume it tastes kinda fishy with some ammonia undertones.  That might be balanced out nicely by the sweetness of the mayonnaise sauce and corn.

I'd try it, it sounds interesting.
