It's good but not something you(*) crave rewatching because you're afraid you missed something or were just that entertained by it the first time around.  That's usually the mark of more award-worthy stuff.

(*) There are obviously exceptions.

I think it is one of the best shows I have ever seen in my long life, period.

It would be nice if it won all the awards, because it deserves to, but that won't change my love for it. I can't wait until next season, and I hope they do make the time jump somehow and we get the rest of the story...eventually.

2021-07-18 5:01:57 AM
Seasons 4 and 5 had great moments, but pacing went from Slow to Stop.

I think the final book is still due Novemberish. I'll pick it up. I might watch Season 6 in December, if I remember.

Because the Emmys hate Syfy.

I don't mean the genre, I mean the channel. It is seen as a lesser tier network, and if you aren't broadcast or major cable, you get snubbed. If the Expanse was on HBO, it would have enjoyed its 20th Emmy nomination by now,

Even leaving Syfy won't get The Expanse the recognition it deserves. It has that stigma attached to it so it will never be seen as A-grade television. Because it once aired on a B-grade network.

2021-07-18 5:18:58 AM
Because it wasn't considered as good as the other shows nominated?

It's hardly great acting, and even though the books are entertaining popcorn space opera, the TV show is much more limited in scope due to the fact it's TV, so the writing and dialogue are equally limited.  Given the involvement of Ty and Daniel, though, it's certainly better than it could have been.

It usually does ok in the genre awards, which are usually less bothered by the technical side and much more a popularity contest.

At the end of the day, it's only the Emmys, and whichever companies paid for the best For-Your-Consideration goodybag and escort service, gets the nominations. Winning takes even more hookers and blow.

2021-07-18 5:22:12 AM

I'm probably reaching pretty hard here. This might work out like Lord of the Rings at the Oscars. They waited until they saw how the final movie turned out and Return of the King swept in 2004.

Two Towers was a better movie.

I really like The Expanse.

Burra: Because Holden is a black hole of charisma and needs someone like Naomi or Miller at all times to play off and outshine his blandness.

THIS. I really tried to watch it and the story had a lot of promise. I liked a lot of the characters and the world it was set in. I gave it two seasons and then gave up. Friends recommended it, wanted to discuss, etc., but I just could not get over how terrible Steven Straight's acting was. Everyone else was good (or even great in the case of Thomas Jane), but I just could not stay 'in the moment' any time Holden was on screen. It was just distractingly bad, and not in an amateurish way ("look at me, I'm ACTING!!!") as that might have been tolerable, it was just dull and uninspired staring off into space (pun intended) with an expressionless face.  My friends who love the show said they didn't see it, but man, it just killed me. Shame, as I think I might have really liked the show with another actor in the role.

He at last decided we was demons and only waiting for dark to steal the wits from his head; and while riding along Znuh muttered prayers and incantations to bring us bad medicine, but so ran his luck that he never saw any of the animal brothers that assisted his magic-such as Rattlesnake or Prairie Dog-but rather only Jackrabbit, who had a grudge against him of long standing because he once had kept a prairie fire off his lawn by exhorting it to burn the hares' homes instead. Which it did, turning away from his lodges after coming so close the siding had melted. Ever since that incident the rabbits all knew him, and when encountering him alone would stand up on them enormous hind legs and say: "We think bad thoughts for you." They would also call him by his real name, which is as malicious as you can get, and go bounding off, showing white or black tail as the case may be, for both families had it in for that particular poster.

For those disapproving of the show, it does start out as a slow burn gumshoe story. Give it half a season and it becomes a hard sci fi and political intrigue epic.

2021-07-18 10:04:54 AM
>The Academy Awards famously toyed with (and then retreated from) the idea of creating a "Best Popular Film" category to include movies that people had actually seen, which would have created a silo of things audiences enjoyed away from the "real" awards fare.

The problem is the awards shows are trying to be profitable entertainment rather than actual, meaningful awards.

If the people making a show do their jobs well, the average person won't notice.  If you're not in the industry - and probably even in a specific specialty - you're unlikely to recognize where spectacularly difficult work has been flawlessly executed.  And if the average person is unaware, they're not going to care about an award for it.

So yeah, an award show that's some kind of blend of "this was done well, and it also drew popular acclaim" is probably a good idea if you want to sell your awards show as more entertainment.  Which you absolutely shouldn't do if you want your awards show to have any credibility.

I agree, the protomolecule/portal stuff is the worst part about the show.  I can see why there are no nominations since this last season was probably the weakest, and the the last episode was absolutely terrible.

/hey lets do that blind firing thing for 30 minutes where no one gets hit until the good guys start dying one at a time until magically the main cast are the only ones left at the end to escape

The actor who plays Holden has wet eyes. No matter the scene, his eyes have the wet look that he is trying to hold back the tears after his high-school sweetheart just broke up with him.

Anyways, I like all the changes the had to do for TV, especially the Bobby and Drummer stuff, but they missed the mark with Bobby twice.

First, the show runners totally weak sauced the space yacht beat down. It was a major part of the book in establishing the badass of Bobby the Space Marine and how her team got the beat down by the proto molecule soldier and her eventually victory over the same. The show went for laughs instead and those in charge should have been fired on the spot.

Second, they major story changes that led to Bobby not getting on the Roci completely negated her best scene in all the books. I am talking about when she hit the gunners chair to help with the space battle and the awesome Bobby-Alex interplay. The show runners even set it up with Alex getting the beat down over and over in the battle simulations. This was a huge miss.

The changes to Drummer I think worked out great to fill out the cast and not fall too far into the TV trope where there is only a small cast to keep things cheap.

There's a number of questions for which there's a simple (and correct) answer for:

The Questions:
1. Why didn't X get an Y award?
2. Why did X tank at the box office?
3. Why did X not meet financial expectations?
4. Why did X do worse than Y?
5. Why is there not going to be a sequel to X?

The Answer:

I agree Bobbie is a character they've had a very hard time translating from page to screen. But considering she got an expanded role on Season 5 that does balance how often she gets to flex in the books. Also, not having all of the male crew members swoon over her helped.

But, if I had to pick one that the changes in 3-5 screwed over? Sam.

But on the positive side with the rewrites in 3 it meant they could open a very different path for Ashford. The new content with Drummer and him have been well worth the way the two original B-story characters were swapped.

The series generally improves on the story.

NathanAllen: not having all of the male crew members swoon over her helped.

Bobbie may not be a cleavage-bearing coat rack with boobs, but she's all kinds of awesome as a character.  I'd have to give a good think as to whether or not I could find her attractive enough for that kind of swooning, because I'd definitely be very busy fangasming in awe.  At least as shown in the television series, she has superhuman ethics and morals combined with an adamantium spine and epic combat skills.

You meet people like that and if you know who they are and what they've done, they're not really human to you because they've achieved things you can't seriously imagine yourself achieving.
