I used to live in Leakey, and there's good reason for the phrase "lord willin' and the creek don't rise."

There was a river between us and the "school" and if it rained a bunch, weren't nobody getting into town.

i for one appreciate the american english slang subtitles.

imagine this in:

UK english "faaaahkin hell mate! i think i've bollocked this up now, wot wot!"
Irish: "jaysus croist mate ah fuct it nau hey."
Australian "Crikey mate i've gone all gallipoli on this wallaby!" (not really)
Scottish *gutteral throaty sounds*coont! *gutteral sounds*
Canadian "sorry, but... yeah. no."
Ebonics "sheeeeeet man that honkey be messin' my ol' lady? Got to be runnin' col' upside down his head, you know?" actually wait thats from airplane.

If you know anything about German regional culture, then this video is AMAZING.  My family is from this part of Germany, and they take pride in the fact that the rest of Germany regard them as hillbillies. The only debate is whether they or the state next door are purer country folk. Think, people in Southern West Virginia fighting with people in eastern Kentucky over who is more Appalachian.

I know guys like this.  I've gotten drunk with guys like this.  I nearly had my head blown off by one when he overloaded a mini cannon with black powder and turned it into a five lb pipe bomb.  I absolutely understand his thinking, and his bewilderment when his car started floating, which it shouldn't have, because that's the kind of thing that only happens to other assholes.

That I at least understand.  That's a truck bailout ramp, probably in the Alps, for trucks who lose their brakes after they fry them on long steep downgrades.  Truck 1 used it, and truck 2 needed it.  Smart move by truck 2 to get back into it without hitting truck 1.

huh. i hadnt heard that 'pfaelzer are hillbililes" thing. thats generally saved for the erzgebirge Sachsen. But then again thats more like Germany's deepsouth, not appalachia...

i live not far from here and work at a company with a lot of guys from all over the south west, from Karlsruhe to Mannheim (north to south) and Saarbruecken to Heilbronn (west to east). In my experience, the Pfaelzer are just these laid back sorta chill laissez faire unflappable wine drinkers who dont give AF and quietly revel in the fact that their region gets more sunshine than the rest of germany put together.

The rest of germany regards them as effete pseudo frenchmen who are barely even germans.

but hillbilies? not heard that one! :)

Spent an hour yesterday afternoon watching German television reporting on the flooding and interviewing locals. The amount of damage is staggering. It looks like stuff from old-time Mississippi floods. Roku has been a blessing.

Also, I've never heard that these people are kind of Germany's hillbillies (as Father_Jack pointed out). There were only a couple of the interviewees whom I had any difficulty understanding (because regional accent). They all seemed to be your standard, middle class, "person I wouldn't mind lifting a beer with" types.

Yeah, that second driver really has skills, if you look at how he had to avoid the pylons marking the lane.

Jesus H Christ.  Why do people think it's ok to go 60mph past cars that are stopped.   If one lane of traffic is stopped the next lane should be 30mph.    Even if they are a backed up exit lane, you never know who is going to decide to get in or out of that lane.  If you don't know why they are going that slow, then there is all the more reason to slow down.

What do you mean by sandbox racism specifically? I'm not familiar w that term

From my "raised in California moved to europe" perspective, german regionalism is pretty benign and mostly tongue in cheek superiority; local products and all that. I kinda can relate as a coastal Californian, we love being proud of our beaches, music and tech industries, stupid accent etc, and yeah we look down our noses at the flyover... so I'd say it's more like than, at least as how I define, "racisism". That's just a whole league more hard core.

I guess my point is, germans from one region looking down their noses at germans from another seems to me to more applicable to Californian Ian's and Texans, or new Yorkers and Georgians, or londonderry against mancs/scousers,this sorta thing.

It's no where near the severity, in every sense,of "racists"

You make valid points. And one can see it that way. I actually tend to describe Bavaria as "Germany's Texas" due to things they have in common in my opinion: Bavarians first identify as such, and then go on to tell you that Bavaria happens to be in Germany. I noticed the same with Texans abroad. They tell you "I'm from Texas" not " I'm from the USA"

I find it local patriotism a bit cringy. Sure it sounds like "fun and  games" but let's not forget some of these Germwn regions fought actual wars against each other. Looong time ago, but still...
