So?
It isn't the job of the government to investigate what people say, no matter how stupid it might be.

2021-07-16 5:07:07 PM
Considering how many people have died because of that misinformation, now that they have been identified, shouldn't they be getting arrested?

Disagree.

This is 'Yelling "Fire" In A Crowded' theater situation in reverse, i.e. telling people in the burning theater not to leave because the fire won't hurt them.

If you talk someone into committing suicide there are consequences. Abusing our most... ill-equipped citizens should have consequences as well.

If it was, you'd be under more investigations than Trump, and that's saying something.

There is a distinct difference between misinformation and disinformation.
The motivation between the two is not the only difference.

Maybe class action civil lawsuits might be in order considering it's affected a very significant portion of our population.

Despite my own predictions, free speech absolutism has never commanded a majority in the United States or on the Supreme Court.

Historically, the conservatives' argument - and until just recently it has been conservatives arguing in favor of restrictions, the odd Scalia notwithstanding - has been that there are things you can say in peacetime that no one would or should tolerate during time of war. (This argument failed, by the way, all hail NYT v US.) mmm

Disinformation of the variety currently being practiced is akin to running around suggesting the Nazis were very fine people, circa Dec. 12, 1941 - May 8, 1945.

Coronavirus likes this 👍🏽

So the administration is in talks with FB to target specific individuals to block?

That feels like a really bad precedent.

I have no problem with the admin actively publicizing who they think these disinfo spigots are, or using soft power and the power of the podium to make them undesirable accounts for these tech companies to maintain.

But just imagine if it becomes normalized for the president to work directly with tech to silence disinfo voices
. And then Imagine if Trump is reelected.

2021-07-16 11:07:53 PM
Remember, every time omebody says:

"We will never convince the ocial media companie to shut down those accounts because they make too much money."

They are, in fact, saying:

"I [the person aying it] think that the Constitution is being used properly when a ocial media company is protected by a constitutional rights argument when they propagate instructions to your neighours that tells them to kill you or your children, or leave you or your children disabled."

"I [the person saying it] am using my resources to say this because I am willing to be an agent who helps the social media company intruct trangers to kill your children or disable them, and I expect to be protected by the police and the courts for protecting that company."

We should also take into account that under the anti-terrorim legislation from the Buh admin, and used by the Obama admin, the USA's criminal law is that a person who use the internet to tell anyone to take an action that will reduce a company's profits is a terrorist, at least in the letter of the law. (Hence the polcie can infiltrate anti-pipeline book clubs, or access Facebook friend lists when someone posts an opinion about corporate profits). So, if you say, "No, the profits of the social media company are not enough of a justification for misinforming the public about vaccines," well, that can be prosecuted in any of the 5 Eyes countries even if it only affects an American corporation and even if waving your own tiny fist is obviously not going to affect those profits.

All of which sucks donkey butt. Biden has not shown any plan to change those laws, but he has a few months still where he could. So, he might. But since the Dems go apeshiat over extremist progressives who want to change those laws, well, it is unlikely to happen.

The irony being, of coure, that the Alt Right spent 2010-2014 recruiting people from environmentalist message baords by pointing out the Dems defended that anti-terror legislation, and that's how the Alt Right began online, with savvy MRA and GamerGaters realizing that the Dems were 100% in favour of criminalizing free speech about the environment and corporate misconduct. Too bad that Biden isn't changing the laws, so the tiki torch brigade can recruit even more youth for each one the lefties deprogram.

Radical change means changing the root fo a problem. Centrits cite things like their 401ks and so stop radical change from being on the table.

I still wish they had president Warren right now.

As I said in a previous thread:

Easy solution.

"Health misinformation is creating a public health crisis.  This is a threat to national security.  We are declaring a public health state of emergency.

Facebook says that there is no way for them to control this misinformation on their platform.  Therefore, under the state of emergency we are shutting down Facebook until the end of this crisis."

Betcha they'd figure it out real quick.
