Subby's headline seems to imply there's some political dimension to approval (or lack of) for this movie...? Where the fark does "liberal" come into things here?

The subsequent greenlight seems to suggest 'both sides' can agree the movie sucks.

I am not subby and have not seen the movie, but that seems to be the play.

Yes, well... That'll teach me to comment after the first one is submitted but before the second!

People are really fond of the original Space Jam for some reason. I've never understood why. Even by kids movie standards...it's full of plot holes and weird choices that make zero sense.

It's a movie for kids. Yeah, there's Pixar and Studio Ghibli, but it's crap like this that made them start selling alcohol in American movie theaters.

Game of Thrones shots of Daenerys's dragons and the White Walkers. Pennywise from It is there. The War Boys from Mad Max. Alex and the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange. King Kong. The Mask

I don't intend on seeing either film but that is rather obnoxious to put those references in a kid's movie.

It's what morons consider "clever". If you're gonna put the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange in a movie, they'd better be raping an innocent woman with a giant ceramic penis.

I saw this movie exactly once 24 years ago but his bad acting imprinted itself on my memory.

It's not about clever, it's about giving the parents a reason to not take a nap in the theater when they take their kids to a movie. The kids have no idea what the references are, but the parents are like, "Oh...haha".

So ultimately it is clever.

I don't know what you think clever means.

Well it's not like they invented the gimmick. "Clever" is a strong word.

The problem isn't so much the reference, it's that it only seems clever to hack writers because they saw it on the Simpsons during Treehouse of Horror marathons. It's such a dated callback that even most of the parents in the audience won't get it. Personally I only recognize it thanks to a film course I took that covered some of Kubrick's best-known work. It's not a movie I would have sought out on my own.

Having just watched the new one with the kids, it wasn't as face melting bad as it's being made to be.  There was more of an actual plot to this one.  Also, the only R-rated reference the first one made was Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam dressed up like Pulp Fiction with that music in the background.  (The Charles Barkley line about Madonna doesn't exactly count as R, but more PG-13.)  There were multiple R-rated/TV-MA references in the new one, some of which my kids picked up on.  That said, the first one is still the better film according to my kids.  Maybe it's because they went into the first one having no knowledge of Michael Jordan being real, but knowing that LeBron James is very much real.

They have to be clever to pull off the gimmick.

Small Town Misfit: Jordan does a surprisingly good job acting

Agreed.  If there is one advantage LeBron has over Jordan, it's that he's actually been in movies before, most notably Trainwreck.  It was not nearly as painful to watch him act as a version of himself as it was with Jordan.

We're not talking about just copying a viral video and saying, "I know, I'm also going to dump a bucket of ice water on my head!"

They have to find adult references, then figure out how to work them into a children's movie without making it "not a children's movie"

For modern audiences, it's verging on obscurity. Because of its content, it doesn't get constant TV replay, and nobody's talking reboot. It's not obscure to Farkers, but on average, we're pretty damn old.

I didn't like the first one, no interest in the second even if it didn't star the Conor McGregor of the NBA.

I will point out that the original Looney Tunes often had adult jokes that the kids wouldn't get, too.

I predicted it back when the trailer first came out: the original movie is about the Toons, with Jordan brought on as a supporting ringer; the new movie is about LeBron, with Toons as supporting characters.

I have no interest in watching a movie about LeBron

Sorry, that reasoning doesn't hold up.

Even as a kid, I recognized good kid's films and bad kid's films.  On TV, I knew when a show was good or bad. Do you think your critical eye just popped open when you hit 18?  Just saying something is for kids doesn't excuse a lack of quality or even competence.

As someone in the movie industry I see that a lot. Why would you put a reference to a different, better film into your own movie? That just makes me think I'm wasting my time, and should just watch that original movie.

Making a film is hard work, and it always surprises me (though it shouldn't) that studios will get the cheapest scriptwriter available, then throw a hundred million dollars at it trying to fix it in post. Just get a good writer to start with. Don't shoot a foot of film before you have a second act.

Are you sure you're in the film industry? Because that doesn't sound like how studios think at all. It's more "Here's the target demographics for this one. Make sure you dangle this list of things in front of them to hold their attention, and get this thing ready for theaters by its pre-assigned release date. And don't waste time writing some fancy schmancy script, shooting has to start tomorrow to leave time for the effects crew to do their thing afterwards. The big money is overseas now, and they like spectacle and simple plots that don't require much translation."
