Extra crunchy on shingle beaches.

Just bring an empty bowl with you on the roller coaster. Someone will eventually fill it with human body temperature split pea soup.

Inappropriateness for beach dining notwithstanding, the spaghetti looks reasonably good. Assuming you don't mind it having 5000 mg sodium per serving.

I dunno, that looks like it could be pretty good.  I don't know how well the sweetness of the condensed milk would be balanced out by the saltiness of the capers, but given the condensed milk is throughout the sauce and the capers are just extra-salty pops here and there, I'm not convinced it would.  I'd be tempted to forego the condensed milk, and possibly the capers, as that might be a bit too salty. Also not a fan of plantains, but that's just me. Otherwise though it sounds pretty good.

I think you missed the "2 Tbsp olive brine" that also goes in the sauce.

The recipe calls for evaporated milk, which is unsweetened so you're probably getting more sweetness from the 1/2 cup of tomato paste. Capers as well aren't really too salty if you rinse and drain them; this recipe probably gets far more salt from the olives and olive brine it calls for. Now I kind of want to try this recipe even without the beach.

I agree, but I will expand that and say all noodles/pasta are perfect. I'm currently having a love affair with Asian noodles, the glass kind. There isn't a time of day that noodles and fixin's aren't perfect for.

The perfect beach treat is Rasta Kabobs:
skewer chunks of:
Watermelon
Honey Dew
Pineapple
Place in Rubbermaid tray with lid, soak with Jamaican rum, place on block of dry ice in cooler

Beach food is a Kraft single sandwich with mayonnaise on white bread and a bag of unsalted potato chips.

I did miss that part, yeah.  Mind you 2 tablespoons isn't absolutely terrible until you add the capers as far as saltiness goes (the vinegar to me would be the worst part of adding brine).  But as someone else mentioned upthread I guess you can rinse the capers -- though I think they still absorb a fair bit of salt from the brine even so.  They're good with steak, but it seems like they might be a bit much in a red sauce unless you either use unsalted canned tomatoes or use fresh roma tomatoes that can take some of that salt.

Now that's a day at the beach.  I'd add mango as well.

Mango sounds delicious as well. I picked those three for the traditional Rasta colors. The only logistical caveat is that you can drain some juice out of melons in a colander to leave room for alcohol absorption; not sure how well that works for mango.

Spaghetti and rice...? Starch and starch...?

I don't know how to factor the equation of this starchitude.

I thought is was going to be something prepared by the brides of Christ to fuel the inquiring "hounds of the lord" ("domini canes").

Luxury.

When we would go to the beach we'd bring unwashed grapes that had been partially crushed sitting in the hatchback window in direct sun.  We'd then wash it down with a hot can of Tab soda that was shaken walking 2 miles across a sea of humanity to find a small patch of broken seashells and rotting seaweed to pitch a blanket.

There was a cool at my corporate cafeteria who worked as a cook in the army.  He regularly served mashed potatoes and rice on the same plate.

doesn't locomoco often have rice, mac-salad, and mash/fries? still, nom!

I forget which chain it is, but I recall a recent ad along the lines of, "our crazybread is the same awesome dough as our pizzas!!1!2!!; and so are our cinnamongstix!" - ooo-k, so you're telling us what we already knew but now also bragging about it mhm.

My mother told me the story that in the 1930's when my mother was a girl, her Italian immigrant mother would make a big pot of spaghetti with rabbit sauce (her family raised rabbits for food), and she, her 6 siblings and her parents would cram into her father's truck with the pot of spaghetti and head out to South Beach in Staten Island from their home in Newark, NJ. Fun times and good beach eating.
