I'm fine with that if they start paying employees at least $15/hr

No kidding. It seems like corporations are competing to say and do the stupidest things when it comes to livable wages in the US.

Offering $16-17 in Bozeman, at the local Taco Bell.

They don't have to do it. I'm sure they are pretending that it's the reason for a price increase.

But I also don't care

I would happily pay more for a meal knowing the people who made it can afford to, you know, live.

Too many working poor have to rely on public assistance which we're all paying for. Would much rather see them get an actual living wage and not have to deal with the stigma.

And all that paperwork, which means a few government drones may not be needed long before their pensions kick in.

Taco Bell's prices have gone up considerably more than 10% if one looks at longer-term trends.  I blame the introduction of the Gordita and related higher-end offerings.  The number of required ingredients spiked and the cost to operate thus spiked.

Don't get me wrong, the Supreme Beef Chalupa is probably my favorite thing on their menu.  But back when their list of ingredients was hard corn tortillas, soft flour tortillas, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, onions, beans, ground beef, and chicken to make 95% of what was on the menu, they were a lot cheaper.

2021-07-15 11:33:37 PM
...and it probably will up 20% next year too. All restaurants raise prices little by little year by year so it is not a big shock to customers.

My nearby taco bell thinks advertising "Starting pay up to $12/Hr" is going to get them applicants.  only able to get stoners and collage kids to work there

They're going to price themselves right out their own market. They're pricing themselves close to fast casuals. BWW has a new chicken sandwich and fry combo for $5.99, that's the same price as a McDonald's new shiaty chicken sandwich and fries.

local TB replaced Counter Help with 2 side by side order screens. 1. I don't want to be close to you, it's a 'rona thing 2. you know how some people can't wear wrist watches, others a compass won't work? my nemesis is public use touch screens. about 80% of the time I can't get them to activate.

I stopped eating TB. you'd be shocked if you saw the size of my belly.

McDonald's burgers were about 35 cents when I was a kid, so yeah, they do raise prices over time. And it's not just restaurants, I once bought a new car for $8500! Is there a Fark economist that can explain what's going on?

I can't use most touch screens, unless I wear gloves with touch-pads.
On the other hand, given what I've read about fecal contamination on public touch screens, gloves are a good idea

This is probably the truest threat to the place Taco Bell really holds in people's social understanding. You used to be able to go to Taco Bell and get absolutely nutty with the amount of food you could get for 10$. It wasn't the quality. It was the quantity.

TWX: I blame the introduction of the Gordita and related higher-end offerings.

While I concur, they have to market-mine for these types of new food. The Crunchwrap was an absolute stunning victory in marketing and sales. Same for the Doritos Locos. And Baja Blast. Its almost never the introduction, but the retention of these items on the menu that leads to creep.. and the inevitable reset of the menu - reducing it down again. No one is safe. Everyone has a soft tortilla spot in their heart for something on the menu that gets cut. May we never forget those that have passed.

Agreed.  I take my 15 year old son, and can easily spend $20 or more.  Like, Taco Bell is supposed to be cheap!  What happened?!

Taco Bell is that one place, more so than probably any other fast food place that I'll sometimes crave only to be totally disappointed after the meal, and wonder why the hell I even wanted that crap in the first place.  Then a few months later I'll do it again.

This.

Last Sunday we had a two hour training thing for work. I wanted to roll in with dinner so I went to five guys.  For roughly the same price as a Big Mac meal I got a pretty damn good burger that I could watch them make from scratch. It came to under $10.  The only "downside" is that I had to wait ten minutes which is no big deal.

They could jerk the prices up by about 80% before I care that much.
I don't feel as guilty going to places if their employees are actually taken care of.
One of the reasons I actually like going to costco (if I need a years supply of stuff), and feel awful if I need to go to walmart.

This isn't about being able to pay people more. It's about being able to pay people more while still giving executives millions of dollars for attending a meeting every now and then.

You can get a 400 Cal burrito for around a buck.

Pigging out is relative I suppose, but I try not to go over 2000 in a meal.

2021-07-16 1:28:57 PM
Fast food hasn't been cheap for a long time, unless you're getting the dollar items.

It also hasn't been fast for a long time.

If I'm driving through to get something, the only reason I'm doing that is because I'm in a hurry. A trip through the McDonald's drive-through lately is at least a 15 minute trek, sometimes up to 30 minutes. For the farking McDonald's drive-through. If I'm there, I'm not expecting a burger made to order. Grab one out of the heating rack and throw it in a bag for me. I'm there because I want something fast because I'm trying to get somewhere and didn't have time to get something better.

So I have zero reason to ever go to fast food any more.

Oh, forgot to mention, that's usually at least 2 or 3 meals for me.

And the 5 layer burrito is like 2.50 or something by itself. And reheats fairly well.
