Sportsball types get mighty snowflakey when it comes to defining "disrespect."

Being an asshole in any capacity should be a penalty.

Including running up on an official and arguing a call.

If I was an NBA ref, the benches would be down to two players each by the beginning of the 4th. Touch me and you are gone for the night. Use the f word or any other colorful language towards me or my family, same thing.

I could understand the coach or team captain being allowed to complain to an official but no one else for any reason.

These penalties get real stupid especially when someone scores a game changing touchdown and suddenly gets called for excessive celebration

*insert South Park sarcastiball screencap*

Honestly, we should either treat sportsball as a work environment or a non-work environment. This half-assed waffling all the leagues for all American sports, both pro and minor, just invites more bellyaching from the peanut gallery.

What was that video game on Sega genesis?  Eternal Champions?  Your character could use demoralizing chants every so often so your opponent could not use their signature move on you for a bit.  It was funny watching the female wrestler call the other guy "Pig!"  "Pig!" "Pig!?" and the big burly dudes were unable to end things early.  I guess that's what happens in college sports that they're trying to quell?

Extremely funny since the article and whole rule is about the "horns down" sign was hurting the Texas Longhorns feelings. That is what the whole rule is about. Regular taunting is always penalized. Flashing the "horns down" sign as opposed to Texas' famous "hook'em horns" sign is the reason it is being discussed. Even the coordinator of officials said he hopes one day some other team's will come into play so it won't be all about Texas

I was just pointing out that this was an anti-Sooner rule.  Sure, other teams occasionally go horns down, but 9 times out of 10, it's OU.

My niece is in the band for a Big 12 school.  They have been instructed not to do horns down while in uniform.  Although I am unsure what the consequences are, I've been told they're quite serious about anyone acting in any official capacity for the school to not use that gesture.

I know Texas swings a damn big hammer in terms of what happens in the conference, but this is farking ridiculous.  Fark 'em.

I can't wait for  Big12 games to look just like BYU vs. AFA.

so how about the team playing TExas, their band's horn section - trumpted, trombones, tubas, etc. -  at halftime slowly lowers their instruments?  "what?  we were just tired!  we weren't saying 'horns down'!"

yup.  i remember i think the red river shootout 2-3 years ago the other team - whether the Sooners or not, maybe just a regular game - before the game the tv crew said they'd been warned to not do Horns Down, naturally someone did, they got penalized and the crew was like,"that was a dumb penalty because they had specifically been told not to do that."  and i'm like, ok, but........then let the Longhorns mock the other team's stupid symbol!"

jesus christ, longhorns.  grow some balls  / ovaries.  it's just a symbol.  you had to cry like biatches to the NCAA to change the rule?

Snowflake ass biatches.

can we add wide receivers doing the "first down" signal?

baorao: can we add wide receivers doing the "first down" signal?

I would make the rule that if a wide receiver makes the catch, gets up and makes the first  down signal...and they didn't make the first down, then the ball automatically is given to the other team.

I say dead ball, spot foul, loss of down. So you're snapping at 2nd and 10. exemptions for completions 20 or more yards down field, or any 4th down.

call it the Nate Burleson rule, because that dude would catch a 7 yard slant on 2nd and 4, and break 0 tackles on 2nd and celebrate the first down for 5-11 Lions offense.

On the one hand, I laugh at UT.

On the other hand, it's not like any of the other schools or states involved in the Big 12 deserve to be happy.
