The baseballs used won't be from the humidor. Those the Rockpile might want to bring their gloves.

I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I haven't been this excited for the HRD since the steroid games of the late 90's.

It doesn't look like he's back back back back for the ESPN coverage this year.

If Ohtani gets to 61 or 62 does MLB do anything in terms of acknowledging it or events?

I doubt it because they still say that Bonds has the record.

They bring over a Yokozuna to perform a dohyo-iri in front of the pitcher's mound, with Joe West as Sword Bearer and Angel Hernandez as Dew Sweeper.

\ this is a bit obscure, sure.

That's kind of where I'm at. They'll let ESPN blow it well up so there is hype, coverage and eyeballs in case they erase Bonds later (and Mac/Sosa) but the official line will be that Bonds is the record and this is just a rather special year only

Also they showed that McGwire had 37 at the break in 98 and Ohtani "only" has 33.

How many innings had McGwire pitched in the fist half?

I'm a huge Angels fan and I don't care at all if Ohtani wins. I just want him to hit a couple of 500 foot blasts. In practice earlier he launched one an estimated 510 feet.

And he's probably going to mess up his swing and hit 5-10 the rest of the year.

Yup. I love the derby, but it's been proven plenty of times to put ice on hot batters in the second half of the season.

Hopefully ohtani is the exception this year. He's magical.

Back when I played, a homerun derby never messed up my swing nearly as much as a round of golf did.

Pretty sure the whole home run derby messes up your swing is a myth. Ohtani won a derby in Japan and he said he will treat it just like a regular batting practice. That's the same exact advice that Garret Anderson gave on a recent Angels broadcast talking about when he won the derby in 2003.

It's not a myth, it just doesn't apply to everybody. It's the guys that go in and literally swing differently knowing they're going to be getting the same pitch over and over.

That's a good question and I see it's been addressed, but I agree: Bonds has the record, even if it's tainted by PEDs. It would certainly fuel speculation about what he could do as a full-time DH and whether or not he should get his own plaque for the pitcher with the most home runs or something.
