I watched that live.  Knowing it had a 8.3% chance of blowing up made it even more exciting!

Not bad for early 70's tech (design started in 1969). Too bad there wasn't a replacement.

Well, some of it was based on 60's tech, notably the successful J-2 engines of the Saturn V which evolved into the RS-25s.

I never understood why this country would cancel a shuttle program with nothing sitting in the hanger ready to succeed it.

Answer: republicans today with their never-ending rant of "Where are we gonna get the money? Where are we gonna get the money?". If Reagan hadn't greenlit it, it would have never left the drawing board.
