SpectroBoy: Hey farkers, How was the movie?

I thought it was pretty good. It had some silliness to be sure, but it was all in good fun. I thought the aliens were well designed and genuinely scary looking. There were action sequences that made me laugh out loud at their daffiness, but that's what I want out of a sci fi action blockbuster.

Well, it's a time travel movie, so the plot will, as usual, disappoint you. Good action, visuals, music. Weak writing, acting, and story. So... there it is. I give it two small stars.

A SyFy-Original script with a Hollywood budget.

Creature design is great. JK Simmons is also great. Everything else barely reaches meh.

First half to 2/3 was kinda meh - I can totally get the screwup but why didn't anyone bother to bring anything other than bullets and people to the future?  Why not send grenades or flamethrowers?  The second half (or I guess last third) was really good.  And JK brought it.

About 45 minutes too long.

I guess my only real question is: Will I regret wasting the time watching it?

Regret is a very personal thing. There is no way to predict what another person will regret, especially someone you don't even know. There is one exception to the rule, and it is this stupid movie. Run away. Seriously.

I'm kidding, it was fine. So maybe. Maybe not. Does that answer your question?

No, but you'll probably only watch it once.

3 lapses in logic in the first five minutes. It sucked.

I made it about 20 minutes, and that included a lot of fast forwarding through predictable, irrelevant dialog. Once it went another ten minutes of Pratt moving with a weapon, I bailed.

Thank you for this. All I've ever heard my life are things like "impossibly handsome," "studly beyond belief," "makes Einstein look like an idiot," "more kind than grandma when she slips you cookies she knows you're not supposed to have," "paragon of virtue," and things like that.

I've just wanted to be able to fit in and not get noticed, to not get buried by panties thrown at me when I go out in public. Maybe that'll happen tomorrow but as for today? Today, I am sufficient and I'm satisfied with that.

Again, thank you. It means more to me than you can possibly know.

As long as you don't think about it too hard, it's a perfectly good popcorn movie. I thought Yvonne Strahovski did a phenomenal job with weak writing, and Chris Pratt did his usual workmanlike job. It would have been better with more JK Simmons, but otherwise it was entertaining enough.

Pop some popcorn, grab a beer (or six) and just enjoy the ride.

Look, if you can find a role where JK Simmons isn't great, I'll watch that movie just to experience it.

This movie? God damm the number of better movies that it clearly wanted to be and stole ideas from was ludicrous.

Hell it even tried to be Lord of the Rings with not knowing when and how to end.

Grenades, flamethrowers, any sort of vaguely effective tactics.

They were fighting a very losing war.

It was a fun movie but i only saw it to watch the absolutely hilarious Mike Mitchell, who was just ok in the movie but has one of the funniest podcasts ever made, The Doughboys, where they review fast food restaurants

I also thought the movie needed more father daughter action, iykwim

It's fine as long as you are willing to turn off the critical thinking part of your brain.  A decent popcorn movie.  It's also fun to laugh at all the plot holes after the fact.

I'll never watch it again, but I wasn't bored while I was watching it.  Rating B-.

Probably not - it's a fun movie. It's scientific accuracy and sheer lack of any sensible decision making is very "all our webs are down":

Though I liked the attitude to questions about the time travel which was basically "it's two boats on a river and no we can't make another one and shut up".

Her character on 24 ran around opening ports, so par for the course for roles she gets. She is much better than those roles (see Mr Show) and it would be great to see her in a comedy.

SpectroBoy: Hey farkers, How was the movie?

This is from the very first scene so I don't think it's a spoiler:

People fall from a great height into a pool. One person is in the water and another person lands on them and the impact pushes the one underneath to the bottom of the pool...which is about 18 inches down. It's a shallow pool!  And they fell into it from a great height! And they all climb out of the water saying things like "AHHH!".

If that sounds like the kind of action movie you like, you'll enjoy it.

Ok.  I'm finished with the movie now.  Do the guys at MST3K/RiffTrax still do their thing?  Because this one they should.

Watching this movie was like watching someone play a videogame on twitch, complete with missions, side-missions, and cutscenes. But without all the profanity. And hopefully this will be my last review of this pathetic movie tonight. Because I am very drunk.

I completely do not understand this level of hate for it.

Pratt is hardly doughy, for instance, he is a buffer biatch than I've ever been.

The plot was very much standard Hollywood level time travel Sci Fi bullshiat, Not Sy Fy trash level. The plot had holes you could drive a spaceship through and the overall concept was clearly done Starbucks bound MacBook screenwriter's idea of clever dumbed down further by studio execs. But that's completely Hollywood.

It was fine, it was serviceable, it was turn your brain off enjoyable more than any given Micheal Bay blockbuster, for instance.

There were completely stupid parts, like the little boy they asked about Volcanos instead of a real expert, and the entire character of Sam Richardson, and definitely their weird time travel rules and hand waving of why they can do that at all.

But Yvonne Strahovski and JK Simmons were excellent and Pratt was pretty good. The white spikes were well enough designed clearly Geiger influenced, but that's not a bad thing. Graphics were good.

But how much vitriol I've been seeing for this movie outweighs what I've seen for Edge of Tomorrow or Looper or other easily comparable films. I don't get that.

Solid meh. Pratt reminded me of Denise Richards in that Bond movie and not in any flattering way. The monsters were neat and it didn't shiat the bed.

Its Tomorrows Fast and Furious War,

In the end, it was all about family.

2021-07-08 11:33:38 PM
I have to disagree about the aliens/monsters.  They were horribly designed.  It's like they were mostly patched together using pieces of monsters from other movies - the radioactive Hulk dogs, Alien Covenant dog things, and when they roared it was like they reused the Balrog roaring from Lord of the Rings.  And the CGI was no better than Cloverfield.  Not to mention the fast moving, crawling up any surface and swarming they did - that seems to be in every horror monster/zombie movie these days.  Lazy and derivative.

/The spike shooting was pretty cool though
//But not the tentacles

If there is one thing this movie got right (I laughed at parts that weren't supposed to be funny, because time travel movie), they didn't "do the thing" and roll credits. At least they took the story to the finish line. A lot of movies recently (Netflix's Stowaway immediately comes to mind) drop out too fast.

If there is one thing that I like about the streaming invasion, it's that it's giving us a comeback of the mid-budget movies that have all but disappeared from the big screens, but it's even blockbusters or indie movies now. Movies like "Palm Springs", or even "The Irishman" because apparently no movie studio wants to finance Scorcese anymore.

padraig: Movies like "Palm Springs",

Is that any good? I almost watched it tonight - but it looks like a re-do of Groundhog day which "Map of Tiny Perfect Things" already did.

Instead I watched JK Simmons in "I'm not here" and for anyone who's raving about him in "Tomorrow War", "I'm not here" is highly recommended.
