Does it have youtube and youtube tv app now?  Can we put a netflix, hulu, paramount app on it?

Get with it switch, not all of us want HuluLive.

It's had YouTube for quite a while now.

It's the "DS Lite" of this generation. It's a revision, not an upgrade, and perfectly inline with nearly every single other hardware generation from Nintendo. It's not Nintendo's fault that people listened to idiots on YouTube speculating wildly.

I kind of wish that, since they refuse to drop the price on this thing, that they'd address the fact that the controllers for the thing are pure hot salty garbage. I mean the N64, with its first-gen analog sticks, would wear the sticks out, but they never developed the calibration issues ("drift") that the switch has. Coupled with the flimsy rails they slot onto, it's like, sure, we get a new bigger OLED screen, but I feel like what people really wanted was controllers that are not dogshiat.

... Oh geez, I read that this morning (before the associated news post got added), and just now realized the context.

And it's perfectly on-point. Nintendo literally had not said, no matter how many times they were asked, what the next hardware rev would look like. At all. Not even a hint. I personally think they *wanted* to include some upgrades akin to the "New 3DS", but the chip shortage and other pandemic-related issues forced them to do what they could now, and put off everything else until the Switch's successor.

But like you said, it's not their fault that the media and rumor-mongering insider idiots got everyone else riled up.

The chip shortage changing plans is possible, but I'm not sure if it's the case. The Switch is still selling like hotcakes. They can easily do an actual upgrade one or two years from now and get a surge in sales if needed.

I like the Switch despite its issues, however the quality of the screen was never one of them so it's an odd change.

They replaced one of the usb ports on the dock with an ethernet port. So it's basically just a lateral move that makes the dongle internal instead of an extra.

I feel like, bare minimum, they should have included Bluetooth for headphones.

As I understand it, there are hacks to make Bluetooth, which already exists in the switch, support it on the first gen. Why have they still not done this after Switch Lite and new Switch OLED?

Nintendo adopts hardware trends at their own damn pace, which is typically about a generation after everyone else.

They switched from cartridges to optical discs with the GameCube, a generation after the PS1 and the Saturn.  They didn't adopt HD resolution until the WiiU, a generation after the PS3 and XBox360.  They will have a 4K-capable console...eventually.  Probably the next one after the Switch.

Whether this matters is for the consumer to decide.  I don't think it matters much one way or the other.  People who buy Nintendo consoles are generally people who want to play Nintendo first-party franchises, and that's that.

Personally, I don't care whether they prefer to maintain a position a step or two behind the hardware bleeding-edge.  That's a perfectly defensible approach, probably keeps costs down a bit, and probably fills a market niche.  My beef with Nintendo is their habit of re-releasing their old games over and over (sometimes with graphical upgrades and minor gameplay improvements) and charging damn-near full price every time.

I'm glad to not want to buy a mid-generation hardware upgrade as I don't care about the OLED screen.

But if they were going to make anything better quality they should've focused on the goddamn controller joysticks instead of the screen

I love this attitude. "Those things you enjoyed and had fun with? You didn't really enjoy them, they were actually bad. Mugato has spoken."

Why give people what they really want in the first round if they'll buy what they kinda want instead the first time before releasing what they really want later? Two trips to the well, baby...

From what I understand that is the problem. Despite the chip shortage, the world is producing more computer chips and memory than ever. Any company who had reserved production capacity with a foundry or repurchased huge volumes of chips has essentially all they need. That's why Apple, who buys up years of TSMC production at a time, has been relatively unscathed. Nintendo hasn't decided on an SoC for the "next gen" Switch. Last I heard it would be some kind of potato from MediaTek. Their indecisiveness probably bit them on this one.

I'll be buying this pseudo upgrade so I can gift my younger brother my old switch with all my games.

He will swap my his xbone for it.

I was hoping for a processor upgrade though. If they actually try to improve resolution without one I don't see how they'll avoid slowdowns and other issues.

The better portable screen will benefit me for multiplayer away from home though.

Looks like the exact same resolution when docked or in portable mode.

That's cool if you don't own one already, honestly I've never had a problem with battery life on it and I play mine undocked most of the time. But the extra battery life is a good thing and the ethernet port is going to make it way easier for you to download games.

Just maybe buy an extra controller as back up because the controller quality ain't great.

BOTW is a battery hog I think. But it's also completely anecdotal, usually a couple hours of playing the Switch undocked cramps my hands up anyway so back into the dock it goes. Had it on vacation though and played Hades for a few hours a day and in rest mode when I wasn't and three days later it was warning me to plug it in.

I like the Joy Cons. My kid and I have had a lot of fun with the different Labo sets. And the motion is great for fine-tuning arrow shots on BotW. And I've never had an issue with the rails. They feel sturdy enough.

But all 4 of my Joy Cons are currently sitting in a repair facility for drift issues, so your point still stands. I have an 8bitdo SN30 Pro to hold me over. Highly recommend.

Yeah, there's plenty of third party controllers that work really well with the switch. But one of the reasons I got one was because of the appeal of being able to play it in handheld mode. Which you cannot do with a third party controller. I just find it really disappointing that the guys who pioneered analog sticks in game consoles, and who have had a track record of nigh-indestructable controllers (I still use my Wavebird for Smash) decided to put something out with controllers that just will. not. stay. calibrated.

There's some really nice 3rd party controllers for handheld mode out there, but most if not all of them don't have the rumble or gyroscope of the first party ones

Size vs durability. We should probably be thankful they used real analog sticks instead of the 3DS/PSP-style analog "pad". Or worse yet, a ThinkPad nub.

I travel with around 100 lbs of gear+clothes for work trips as it is, so the dock is a drop in the bucket.

What's weird to me is those apps were available on the Nintendo 3DS. It's not like they haven't been on a Nintendo handheld before.
