Yeah man, we definitely should have gone to war with China over Hong Kong.  Totally worth it.  There are absolutely no maxims involving a land war in Asia we should pay attention to.

And economic sanctions on China would be economic sanctions on Walmart, Target, and Amazon, and ain't nobody in the US willing to pay that price.

At the time I wasn't sure about them giving it back. Now I'm sure that they shouldn't have.
Colonialism was terrible but those poor people left behind.
I remember that the "lease" was going to end soon anyway. Probably nothing really to have been done.

Unless you have a seat in Congress about all you can do as an individual is challenge US political, academic, and business "authorities", mock Winnie Xi Pooh, and stop buying stuff from Five Star China.

Yep, I remember that too.  I think at their most 'respectable' moment with that particular scandal they'd send boxes made in America to China for the Chinese manufacturers to put the products in.

We didn't even nationalize PPE production last year.  You honestly think the US would nationalize $2.12T of the economy over Hong Kong?

Not doing business as usual with China is not just about Hong Kong.  It deals with pretty much everything going further into the 21st century.  The ascendency of China threatens the idea of the liberal democratic state, which regardless of how bad the USA screws that up, one would think most Farkers still support the idea of a democracy over a one party dictatorship.  However, the totalitarian one model system must now  seem fairly appealing to developing countries and more weaker democracies.  China also openly threatens our democratic allies in East Asia (especially Taiwan), along with India. The idea we can co-exist with China is simply becoming more and more difficult.  It might have been okay under the prior leader of China with issues being ironed out relatively amicably, but unfortunately Chairman Winnie the Pooh is now in charge and he's got a hard on for making China into a true superpower.

China has pretty much made it clear that they're not our friend and we've basically sold them the rope that we're hanging ourselves with....as Lenin supposedly said.

Nobody wants a war with China.... the problem is how does one co-exist with these assholes.

Hong Kong is indefensible militarily.
If you took it back, you'd have to take over southern China to protect it.

Hong Kong newspapers have always been notoriously light on politics. The British only brought back a half-assed democracy about four years before they handed it to the Chinese Communists.

They had an old saying under British rule, "We are force fed the fruits of a democracy, but we are not allowed to tend our own tree."

Should have put them in place in '97. Might be a whole lot less plastic floating now and less engine emissions on all that trans-oceanic cargo.

I like how people in this thread thinks Walmart is the only company that sells products made in China. Where do you think the farking computer you're typing your remarks on came from? Or the chips inside it? Or the plastic that makes up the housing?

If you've ordered more than two products from Amazon in the past ten years, you almost certainly bought something from China.

China is seen as the Motherland, so if they could get a deal the majority agreed with, they'd much prefer to be back "home". The British did not offer such a deal until it became a PR nightmare for this "purveyor of democracy" to hand a colonial dictatorship back to China.

I mean, really, what do you expect western countries should do? Should we go to war over Hong Kong? I mean say what you will, but it was pretty much stolen from the Chinese by Britain. Britain finally agreed to turn it back over to them, fully knowing this would be the result. The time to fight was back in '97, when you still held all the cards. Now, you hold none. Sorry, but I am not gonna fight and die for Hong Kong. Now Taiwan, thats a different story.

Also racism.  Rather sign on with the psychopaths than look like they might be beholden or friendly in ANY way to dirty white people.

Same as everyone else.
