All is not lost, grasshopper. China may try but there is a united front forming against them.

But yeah, our biggest mistake was tanking the TPP. That (and it's sister agreement in Europe) would've had essentially a global economic alliance against Russia and China, with the US as the center.

Dude, leave the Tom Clancy novels in the 80s where they belong.  For starters, we have at least 3 boomers at sea at all times.  China isn't going to launch a 'bolt from the blue' nuclear strike on the US, because with 200 nukes (who definitely won't reach all their targets, all missiles have a failure %), the US would still have plenty of nukes left lying around.

FTFA: "On the self-ruled island of Taiwan -- which Beijing views as part of its territory -- Xi was unflinching as he called for the "complete reunification of the motherland"."

It is time the international community just band together, give Taiwan 100% recognition, a UN seat, and let Xi know that any forced reunification with Taiwan would become WWIII. Let China chose, a shooting war with the free world, or leave the island that wants nothing to do with them alone. Sometimes you have to stand up to bullies. China depends too much on trade with those countries, including the U.S. to go into a full fledged war. If a line is not drawn, China will continue its passive aggressive expansion, because  they know there will be no consequence.

FTFA: "And the party has pivoted to new challenges; using tech to renew its appeal to younger generations -- 12.55 million members are now aged 30 or younger -- while giving a communist finish to a consumer economy decorated by billionaire entrepreneurs.

On Beijing's streets, there was praise for the party.
A man surnamed Wang, 42, said: "When I was a child there was a blackout for one hour every night and electricity shortages."

"Now the streets are full of light. Food, clothes, education, traffic are all better.""

I think an effective strategy to cause internal social turmoil in China would be to start a narrative that the Xi government form of communism is not pure and has been corrupted by exploitative western capitalism. Basically create a MAGA movement in China to make China Communist again. Would probably have a lot more harm than pro-democratic groups because Chinese censorship is geared to filter out pro-democratic ideas, not pro-communist ones. Kind of like how the political right has caused an ideological schism in the U.S. with their "real Americans"/"fake Americans", create one in China between the real and fake communists.

Taiwan going nuclear would turn it into a North Korea style pariah, its continued existence is entirely dependent on good will with the US.  The US is not going to support an unrecognized state, a territory it acknowledges is 'part of China' having nuclear weapons.

Taiwan going nuclear would mean its security is placed singularly on itself and more specifically its nuclear weapons which it would have to maintain and protect at all costs regardless of any diplomatic and economic damage their ownership entails.

Eh, I'm actually off the opinion that Taiwan will be officially recognized in the next 5 years and enter into a formal alliance with either the EU or US. They have all of the microchip factories. If China swallows them whole, entire industries will drop off a cliff globally, and no one can afford that. They already are a pariah- only 14 countries even recognize them as existing, and the biggest of those is Guatemala.

We already have extensive experience dealing with a pariah state using a small pile of nukes to ensure their security against much larger enemies and Taiwan is a lot more important to the world economy than Israel is. (Losing TSMC would cause massive damage to both the US and China)   We'd make some grumbly noises in public while quietly helping them with penetration aids for their nukes to make sure China knows that Beijing dies if they invade.

In this case, Taiwan's economic ties matter more than official recognition and they would be severely damaged by going nuclear.

Israel isn't a fair comparison not only because it maintains nuclear ambiguity (maybe that's an option for Taiwan) but because it is recognized by most other countries.

If I was the Taiwan PM I'd do everything I could to entrench myself with other powers, most importantly the US of course but also Japan, South Korea, India. The only positive thing that has happened so far in this recent kerfuffle is that Duterte finally made me smile.  Yesterday, I read that the Phillipines Coast Guard was going to post women on all the radios because Chinese sailors were too horny and misogynistic to avoid hitting on them, which will help keep track of where the ships are.  And apparently that's actually working.

But yeah... there's the joke about how the world would get along a lot better if America realized that a hundred years wasn't very long, and everyone else realized that a hundred miles isn't very far.  But then there's China, smirking quietly in the background, wondering why the benchmark for that joke isn't "A thousand years" and "A thousand miles".  I'm not sure I can even wrap my head around the longevity that is likely an integral part of every Chinese person's cultural identity.

Underestimate China at your peril.

This is absolutely, 100%, not true.

No nation on earth functions well if it cuts off its major trading partners. Autarky works well for nobody. Every major economy on earth is far more interconnected than anyone really likes to think about.

China is just as reliant on the relationship as the US. Without the US they lose their primary export market and largest source of technology transfer and foreign investment capital.

For all the talk about Taiwan getting recognized as an independent nation, before that happens, the Republic of China is going to have to change its constitution and renounce its formal claims to sovereignty over mainland China and parts of Russia and Mongolia. An island that recognizes itself as part of the province of Fujian of the Republic of China has to reinvent itself as the independent nation of Taiwan legally internally first before anyone else is going to move forward on that.

Doing so however is a straight up act of war as far as the People's Republic of China is concerned however, an open act of secession instead of internal political struggle. There's a reason that Taiwan hasn't tried that route yet.

If this were simple and easy, we wouldn't be where we are.
