He's just not the same funny [and slightly racist & jingoistic] cartoon character I watched as a kid.

Hong Kong used to be one of my favorite cities to visit. Very different than the mainland. Free, uncensored internet, just a fun vibrant city with loads restaurants, bars, and tourist attractions.

The mainland has a very different vibe. Everyone knows they're being monitored, and it shows.

RIP HK, we'll miss ya!

Who's surprised? Has China, at any point, made any more than a token gesture toward masking its intentions?

Everyone understood this day was coming from the handoff. I would think most of the smart money moved on long ago.

Now they are SO boned.

But he's the number-one super guy.

I've got a picture of myself at about three years old with my mother and a Hong Kong Phooey mascot at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

So I guess I've got a soft-spot for culturally appropriative talking dog janitor secret agents?

There were a lot of upper-middle-class and rich Hong Kongers who got dual citizenship in the 90s and early 00s, and bought condos in Vancouver and Sydney.  They have boltholes, and I expect a lot of packed airplanes in the next 2 years.

I think a lot of people saw that this was going to happen and left before china took over way back when.

Cracking down on Hong Kong and cryptocurrency at the same time? How is a good communist party member supposed to properly hide their ill-gotten wealth anymore?

Unless China props up the city, I expect HK is looking at a Detroit style exodus and downfall.

Don't worry. MSM, like ABCNews, is celebrating year 100, ignoring Tienanmen Square, Hong Kong and Uighur Genocide:

And with the bumbler-in-chief in charge, Taiwan will soon become part of mainland China. (whispering like the bumbler-in-chief).

Everyone understood this as the lease crept toward expiration and the UK was in no position to force a similar lease.  So roughly the time Nixon went to China?

The only possible shock was when the UK wasn't willing to let the HK British subjects into the UK.  That must have hurt.

The Republican Party.

The GQP only threaten at most a fourth of the people under the CCP thumb.  Granted, if they really manage to destroy the US economy, they could probably cause another Great Depression (they already did wonders with the Great Recession) which might bring down enough of the world economy in ways that the CCP would never try.

yet_another_wumpus:

You think there are ways to bring down the world economy the CCP wouldn't be willing to try?

They just recently lied repeatedly to the WHO about a highly infectious disease (while there was time to stop it) allowing it to turn into a global pandemic killing millions.

Which they then used as cover to go ahead and eliminate Hong Kong autonomy.

There's nothing they wouldn't be willing to try.

There was.  Many went to other commonwealth countries.  However, many came back when in the first decade or so, China was largely hands off.  The economy was also doing exceptionally well.

Pretty much everyone I knew there had studied in Canada, Australia, etc., and many maintain dual citizenship.

yet_another_wumpus:

And if the Republican Party were truly dangerous, it would've accomplished something noteworthy recently.

What was the last big legislative achievement made by Republicans in the US?

Probably the one big thing republicans could hang their hat on over the last decade would be getting their nominees on the Supreme Court.

But even that hasn't helped them actually achieve anything policy wise in the US.   They couldn't even overturn Obama Care during Trump's term despite controlling all 3 branches of govt.

GrizzlyPouch: They couldn't even overturn Obama Care during Trump's term despite controlling all 3 branches of govt.

Why would they want to.

There are a few "issues" that they will never do anything real about because "solving" them means they now have to work to keeping those single issue voters, and that is work. Plus they might actually look at other policies and be disgusted with the party. So unless something better comes along they will never "fix" the issue, and once it does they might just forget about it entirely.

Abortion is another one, they will never do a full ban because then they lose some of the religious drones (as some are using it as cover for other views) who only vote for that, as then they need other policies to keep voting GoP

Hopefully biden sends in the US military to liberate them.

Ain't nobody gonna do nothing.  Tell Hong Kong to get flexible so they can kiss their own asses goodbye.
