Conan announced on his sixth or seventh season show that the secret to success at being a late-night talk show host was to be as big an ass as it was possible to be.  How did that work out for you, Conan?

I'd call a 30 year career a success. Did he screw your sisterwife behind your back or something?

Roughly 28 years in and getting to retire while doing whatever he wants? I doubt there's a lot of regret there

Not retiring (yet). He's moving to HBO. He's doing very well.

I admit, I was hoping for something a little wilder, like the The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or The Colbert Report series finales.

His podcast is also very entertaining and he seems to enjoy them a lot.

He already did it in early 2010. I imagine even he knows it would be pretty damn impossible to top that week. The last eleven years has pretty much been one giant victory lap

Plaster Lion: I'd call a 30 year career a success. Did he screw your sisterwife behind your back or something?

He disappointed me.  His first few years on NBC were magnificent but then he lost Andy Richter and Chris Elliott.  You might call a 30 year career a success, I would as well.  But Conan had his hands on the big prize: the Tonight Show and he lost it.

Yes, I'm a little angry at Conan, he could have been the best.  Some part of his personality sabotaged him.

Lol what

He's had a great career, including being the host of the Tonight Show back when that meant anything. Nearly 30 years and not a sign of being an ass anywhere.

This is such an intensely self centered, bitter take.

His humor over the last twn years has slowly gotten more mean.

I don't really blame him I guess, he just sort of stopped being funny.

You think I'm making up seeing his monologue where he explicitly said he was going to be as big as ass as possible?   I'm not going to search it out for you, but it was a few months before his trip to Ireland.

I don't think I have ever watched his TBS show. I am not even sure what channel it comes on in Canada. But his podcast is hilarious and amazing and totally reminds me why teenaged me loved his version of Late Night, even the early years where he had no idea what he was doing.

I was there at the start - and it was rough - and a huge NBC, O.G. fan.  I even burned almost an entire day in NYC to see a live taping (circa 2002, didn't get in).

He kinda lost me over time.  the "late 30s guy acting like a frat boy*", silly humor, silly dances, "STAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-MOOOOOSSSS!", etc., I found funny.  him doing the same shiat in his 50s?  no.  I watched him on NBC Late Night or whatever - and Leno probably farked him - and I'd watch a TBS version and........what did Dr. Evil say about Austin Powers, "....there's nothing less pah-thett-ickkkk than an aging hipster."  or some such.  the shtick didn't change much and it just reeked of desperation after awhile.

*was never myself a frat boy

Happened to Carlin too. When your job is to observe human behavior and make humorous commentary on it, it kind of gets hard to do without being bitter as humans become more disgusting and obscene.

In retrospect, it seems like the NBC/Conan debacle seems like the death of late night talk shows. There are other factors too, but they aren't fun or exciting anymore like early Conan or Craig Ferguson could do. I still have them on in the background a lot but there's nothing to really make things interesting or fun.

I love Conan. His remotes are awesome and his interviews are phenomenal. His relationship with his staff is just amazing and he brings them into his show.. he brought them with him on his move after Jay and NBC farked him over and paid expenses for that.

He has the greatest sidekick ever in Andy richter.. no question.

His last show ending on a semi-improvisation is super fitting because he's as his best on improv.

I'll second the remotes and staff interactions.
Sona is a gem! And Jordan is a master class in keeping a straight face.

Yes I realize there were people who dropped by all week.

I loved Conan around 2000-2007.

Nothing has ever made me laugh as hard as the Slipnutz when they first appeared on the show. It was so stupid. So gloriously stupid. I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe.
