Not even the first Fark thread about it.

And I'll say it again - it sucks that I didn't get to play Metroid or Super Mario Brothers on my OG Playstation, but exclusives have been a thing since the first console generation. Be nice if it wasn't, but I can certainly understand why it's a thing.

I'd love to play the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, but Sony understandably wants to drive sales to their console, so they're not about to make that cross platform either. I already bought a Switch to play Zelda on (so worth it), but I'm not shelling out $$$ for another console.

Just be glad that it's Microsoft that bought Bethesda, so if you've got a gaming PC in addition to your Playstation you'll still be able to play it. Well, it's a Bethesda game, so you'll still be able to pay it in 5 minute increments between crashes to desktop for the first couple weeks. Sony and Nintendo don't release their exclusives to PC too.

Microsoft has been very supportive of PC gaming over the years, and the current morphing of the Xbox into an ersatz Windows 10 machine is good news for us.

Was.  Was a thing.  The hardware limitations and hardware specific dev kits that made that a thing aren't really a problem nowadays.  Nowadays it's literally and purely just a marketing gimmick meant to manipulate the consumer.

I can't remember the last Bethesda game I liked that didn't have to be modified by so much coding that wasn't Bethesda, it may as well have been a collaboration.

It was always about selling consoles. Always. Even back in the Atari 2600 vs Intellevision days there were games released on both consoles, and ones exclusive to one or the other.

It's not a trick, it just is what it is. Companies know that people will be inclined to buy a console for certain games, and they want that console to be theirs. So an incentive they provide to buy their particular one is console exclusives. Worked for me and Zelda on the Switch. Probably works a lot or they wouldn't keep doing it.

If you buy a company, you can make them only release their games on your machine.

I'm surprised that people *didn't* think this was going to be the outcome.

Ugh, you're tellin' me. When Sony finally released HZD 1 to PC I played it, and it was farkin' amazeballs. Finally saw what everyone had been raving about when it came out. I want to play the sequel really, really badly..... but I'm not buying a console just for that. I convinced my wife to get me an Xbox 360 for my bday one year, to play something (forget what it even was). Played it a few hours, never turned it on again. I'm a PC gamer from the olden days, just can't give up that mouse and keyboard so easily.

Every time I start playing a new Bethesda game I'm waiting for the first couple paatches to fix the crashing issues they always launch with... and a mod for a better inventory UI.

I think it's because they make one inventory UI to be amenable to console players, but it's excruciating to use on PC. Fallouts and Skyrim have a hojillion little things you can hoard, to use for crafting or just sell en mass for cash in the early game. Once the mods come out, searching through your inventory is a breeze. I wish Bethesda would take the farkin' hint and make their next player inventory UI on PC like one of the mods for the previous games.

I never buy their games at launch. I've learned to wait for the GOTY edition to come out. That way I can start out with all of the patches, community fixes, DLC and the mods that had been released up until that point. Granted, that does mean that some of the more amusing Bethesda bugs pass me by, but there are always plenty more to keep me entertained as I attempt to play the game.

I love Skyrim, but it takes so many mods to be considered playable, that I can't fathom playing it on anything but PC. All Bathesda games are horribly broken trash duct taped together by community mods.

Any "XBox exclusive" is also on PC.

If you have a Playstation instead, unplug your controller, walk one room over to where your PC is, and plug it into the PC instead.

Now you have 100% of the Playstation experience without even waiting for one of Bethesda's historically hilariously shiatty ports, and you'll have the actual functional version of the game made by some player with an SDK instead of the completely non-working one you're stuck with on an actual console, farking congratulations.

// Bethesda games are not really a good hill to pick to die on in the "which console" versus "PC version" conversation, because as valid as you may consider that argument in general for Bethesda there is a definitive, quantitative answer beyond any dispute because only the PC version will ever even possess the basic functional ability to be coherently played as an actual game for anything they ever make.

mongbiohazard: Microsoft has been very supportive of PC gaming over the years, and the current morphing of the Xbox into an ersatz Windows 10 machine is good news for us.

They've come around but they weren't always friendly with the PC market, especially at first.  Halo was originally developed for the PC, until Microsoft bought them out so they could have an exclusive developer for their upcoming attempt to enter the console market, the original Xbox.  It still got a PC release because the Xbox was basically running on the same hardware, but none of the sequels did.  They embraced the popular sentiment that the PC was doomed as a gaming platform and basically ignored it for years, even though porting the games over would have been trivial since, again, they basically ran on the same hardware.

They eventually came around when it became obvious that PC gaming refused to get on the cart, and that console games weren't the magic bullet to kill piracy that they thought it'd be.

Yeah, the Xbox is fairly lacking in big-name exclusives, and completely, or almost completely, lacking in big-name console exclusives that don't also come to PC. Sony and Nintendo, notsomuch. Sony fanboys in particular can quit their biatching, since at least there are hardware reasons for games to be Switch-exclusive.

I was pissed when they gobbled up Halo for Xbox too, but I didn't take it as a swipe against PC gaming. I took it as they were about to get in to the console business, and wanted one of those exclusive titles that sell consoles.

I didn't either, at the time, since they still released the first one on PC.  But when they didn't release any of the sequels on PC it was hard not to take it that way, especially since the xbox hardware was the same as the PC.  The PS2 ran on a different architecture so I could understand them not putting in the effort to port games over to the PC, but it would have been trivial for Microsoft to do so.  They just chose not to.

I just got back into the console world because my son got really into baseball this year and wanted a good baseball game to play.

Knowing the scarcity of the current gen consoles I thought I could just pick up a used PS4 cheap, but holy hell was I wrong about that.

Finally pulled the trigger on an Xbox Series S that I found on craigslist for $225 so it all worked out. Game Pass is pretty cool, especially at $1 for the first 3 months.

Well, yes. Pretty much, yeah. That's the redeeming part of the concept of a brand - you have a general idea of what they have to offer. And that may be what you do or don't want, and can act accordingly. It's information.

The MCU films are generally going to be competently made, escapist fantasies. McDonalds is cheap and fast. The Alamo theater chains have good beer you can drink during the movie, and cute b-movie montages while you're waiting for the movie to start. Benchmade pocketknives are pricey, but very nicely machined. Etc. etc.. If those things are your thing, those brands might be ones you'd be interested in. If they aren't, then they aren't.

Bethesda RPG's are sprawling things, first person RPG's. They include a lot of exploration, interesting quests, optional in game lore to discover and read, and huge game maps with tons of detail. Also, tons o' bugs at launch (little more than even us longtime PC gamers expect normally, but they'll patch them), and thriving mod communities. If that's your thing then Bethesda is a brand you might be interested in. If it's not, then you won't.
