What is Executive Chairman? Is that like Executive Officer in the military?

Like Bob Iger did? Is this a new trend when longtime CEOs 'step down' or has it been a long time thing?

Nothing like a military XO.

Chairman is usually short for Chairman of the Board of Directors. They are kind of like the CEO's boss in that they represent shareholders, but they don't deal with day to day operations. They are generally also experienced business people can provide guidance to the CEO, but the relationship can be complicated at times.

The term "Executive Chairman" doesn't seem to be used currently in their board, so that makes it bit weird.

I think that link clears it up a bit. Kelly was the chairman and CEO. So maybe they like to tie those together with Jordan but they want to keep Kelly in an esteemed position so they create an "Executive Chairman" position on the board. I was stuck trying to figure out why "executive" if there's already a chairman.

Executive chairman is usually used when someone is both owner and CEO of a company.
