Surprised it wasn't a bill to allow MAGAts to run them over in monster trucks and claim 'self-defense'.

It makes me so angry every time I hear about some f*cking Karen or some other officious asshole telling a kid they need a business license.  I mean, WTF?  We shouldn't need a goddamn state law about it.

Why is a kid sending their bill to the governor? Why does a lemonade stand have a bill? Could the parents not cover the cost? Kinda dick that out of 50 senators, no one was willing to cover it.

But will the protect other kids who sell liability insurance to the kids running the lemonade stand?

What about this? Is this legal?

"The short-term jobs that these kids have and the businesses they start benefit them for a lifetime. It teaches marketing skills. It teaches bookkeeping skills and allows our young entrepreneurs the freedom to operate."

Oh STFU rep.  Lil Billy Gates ain't learning marketing or bookkeeping by running a lemonade stand. This is to get your face in the press next to some smiling kids.

Still, those kids selling popcorn or cookies door to door better have a peddling permit from the municipality or I swear to god...

It's a good lesson that getting off your ass gets you closer to your goals than sitting on your ass and waiting for your goals to come to you. I know Fark is full of bitter socialists eagerly awaiting the day the government starts paying them for nothing but in the real world you get paid for working.

I did too. That the bastards came out for a photo op and snuck out without actually paying. The kids can still bill them, though, just send them outrageously-inflated bills and get them payed like so many other government contractors. But they have to be sure they're inflated beyond reason, otherwise someone might get suspicious.

Practicing medicine without a license and calling yourself a doctor without the proper credentials is probably still illegal, but I doubt anyone would bother going after a child for it. I suppose I wouldn't have thought that people would go after kids for selling farking lemonade either, though, so who knows.

Because unwritten rules are BS?  If you want to carve out an exception for them, great.  But it needs to be in a law.  They did that.  That's the correct way to go about things.

We have way too many laws all over this country that don't get enforced (or rarely) enforced... usually it turns racist in the enforcement.

More often than you'd think. We passed a similar bill locally here for Farmers market cottage foods makers that were getting charged the same permitting fees and inspection fees as restaurants bastard there was no happy medium codified anywhere.

I don't know how common it is, but apparently common enough that someone thought a state law was a good idea.

I actually did a program series in the Library a couple summers ago where the kids got money from the Friends of the Library and the Economic Development Council to start a business. Over the series they learned how to budget, learned about business plans, made a proposal and found angel investors, spent time in a volunteer's shop making their stand (they chose lemonade themselves), wrote the advertising for the local radio station and got them to make it a PSA, recorded the ad and ran the stand for a bit.  At the end, they paid back their investors what they had promised and then split the profits.  People here were thrilled.

/I should do that again this summer.

Hershey's bill extends license and permit exemptions to any business operated by a minor that is open for less than 84 days in a calendar year and generates less than $5,000 in net proceeds. The $5,000 cap can also be waived if the stand is created for a charitable purpose.

84 days?! There are 52 weeks in a year, so what I'm hearing is that mom & dad can use their lawn on Saturdays and holidays to sell whatever swap meet crap they couldn't move during the week, so long as Junior is the one sitting outside. Can I get a harumph?

So its a Repub bill and what's the catch? They never do anything with a benefit to someone else. Did one of the members have kids or cousins that got busted? A donor, perhaps?

They never do the right thing. The has to be a catch somewhere...

Have you met....people?  People are stupid, selfish, idiots, insane, creative, and much, much more.
Why do hair dryer makers have to put a notice on their product not to use it in a tub?  Is it because of officious middle managers with nothing better to do or is it because people are stupid and killed themselves by using a hair dryer in the tub?

In my town, there were no laws about having a yard sale.  Then this lady down the block started a yard sale, and it went on for over a solid year.  No one had a problem with someone having a yard sale for a weekend or two but this yard sale was 360 days a year (she would buy things off eBay and mark them up). So the city had to make a law limiting the days in a month someone could have a yard sale.
These kinds of things are why we have to keep having a legislature or equivalent at local, county, state, and national levels.

When I was a kid I used to set up a table selling various fruits (grapefruit, lemons, etc) that grew in our yard, for ridiculously low prices but it's not like an 8 year old has major outgoings...

Anyway, almost every single day some crank would berate me for selling food without a license or paying taxes and threatened to report my to the police/trading standards//whatever.

This was back in the 80's. My experience in the years since has not led me to believe there's any shortage of the same sorts of assholes these days.

Your poorly stored and handled lemonade gave my child listeria and put her in the hospital.

I guess since you were running an illegal business without obeying food safety regulations it's just "caveat emptor"? Or should I just sue the shiat  out of you since you don't also have the requisite business insurance?

Back in the 60s when I was a kid pigeons were very popular for some reason. It seemed like most of us had them so I would catch the ones that roosted in the horse barn and try to sell them on the roadside. It was not a success at all but hey! I tried.
