There is a lot of info that this article leaves out.
Most of it is somewhat more than relevant .

Smithfield is crap, it's mostly water (well, even more water than what God gave the pig to begin with). Even the frozen Canadian stuff is better.

I remember buying a pack of Smithfield because it was cheaper but still looked like run of the mill bacon.  Always left me disappointed and was unusually...what's the word, thin and stretchy?  Looked into it and yup, Chinese owned company.  I always thought it was weird that it was cheaper to raise pigs here, ship it to China for processing, then ship it back for sales.  What a wonderous economy us humans have invented.

what really tickled my vegulon-dumbass was all the stories of people so desperate for proteins they was even buyin' up all the tofus? I mean, I ain't even know if that was true or not, but it certainly gave me a giggle.

also now I have to wonder if they were willing to buy offal and organ meats (which, jeez, that is some of the tastiest stuff on the plant, the hell is even wrong with people)

That was a Facebook rumor. The meat that goes to china stays in China

It was implied, not specifically mentioned. But at the time there were multiple articles mentioning this

"Even as Smithfield warned of a meat shortage, the company was exporting pork outside of the country, the complaint said."

Remember when Trump unilaterally used Korean Conflict-era emergency powers to mandate that "essential workers" remain at their posts in the slaughterhouse line, regardless of the risks to their health?

"US President Donald Trump has ordered meat processing plants to stay open to protect the nation's food supply amid the coronavirus pandemic.
He invoked a Korean War-era law from the 1950s to mandate that the plants continue to function, amid industry warnings of strain on the supply chain.
An estimated 3,300 US meatpacking workers have been diagnosed with coronavirus and 20 have died.
The UN last month warned the emergency threatened global food supply chains.
Twenty-two US meatpacking plants across the American Midwest have closed during the outbreak.
They include slaughterhouses owned by the nation's biggest poultry, pork and beef producers, such as Smithfield Foods, Tyson Foods, Cargill and JBS USA."

I care, b/c those assholes keep buying up other farms/producers and now it's all the same crap. Farmer John's got bought out, and now they don't even make Dodger Dogs.

And when your choices are between Smithfield, Oscar Mayer, and Hormel, no one wins.

Nah. It's what I serve my sisters if they stop by. They don't eat pork.
