What, Shazam gets a movie, but no "The Secrets of Isis"?

2021-06-21 9:39:27 PM
Shazam has been the best DC movie and a fantastic Christmas movie as well. And one of the reasons being is it had (almost) no connection to the JL team (beyond the amusing stinger). They could focus on Billy/Shazam and his story, and not worry about trying to shove it into the overall DCEU.

I'm honestly excited for this sequel, which I can't really say about the rest of the Just Us League members.

These are the only two movies I will acknowledge DC has made since Batman in 2012.

Will they let Black Adam super punch a girl?
Hmmm doubtful.

You just hell "SHAZAM!".

Wonder Woman was on telly the other night when I was visiting my brother in the heilands. Some beers had already been consumed, so there wasn't actually much following of the film happening. Spud from Trainspotting was a Gordon Heilander, which was nice, but my bro ended up in a funk about how accurate their rifles were, and he presented a period accurate rifle from his gun safe to show what they should have been using.

I think it might just have been an Enfield .303, but he was banging on about 1911, and there don't seem to be any particularly British rifles released in that year.

He had the period appropriate bayonet for it though, which was nice.

The only major 1911 really that was around in great profusion was the Colt 1911 pistol to my knowledge.  Rifle-wise they were messing around with the SMLE trying to sort out where they wanted to go with rifles that early on I believe - but that's just kind of when the "Let's see what we can do to update these" thing kicked off officially more or less.  I'm not anyone's expert - only know anything about it due to a friend that collected Brit WWI/II stuff, but... yeah - it isn't just you that's confused.  Perhaps a very early SMLE variant from the early days of fiddling around with the design?

It was fun and wasn't all grimdark like the rest of the DC stuff. Weird how that might make it more enjoyable

Good choice.

Mega Steve:

I have some bad news for you, FTA:

the aesthetic is mostly similar, with the largest changes being tweaks to the lightning bolt logo (removing the lit-up part), new gauntlets and boot designs, and the replacement of a lighter colored fabric for darker, textured material in the suit bodies, bringing the film's aesthetic more in line with other DC superhero movies.

DC apparently needs the superhero aesthetics to fit the new tone of the movie.

Sad.  I thought the costumes were fine the way they were, right up to and including the glowing emblems.

I really hope DC doesn't fark this up by getting grimdark all over the place. May be thinking of the Wonder Twins, but think DC had something ridiculously over the top awful happen to some of these kids in the comics.

It might be the P14, which was a British rifle that the UA arms manufacturers could make easily, unlike the SMLE. The P14 was then rechambered into the American 30-06 cartridge and called the M1917 Enfield.

The SMLE was a stop gap fix of the Lee-Metford rifles that the Boar Wars showed needed some tweaks while a true replacement (both in rifle and cartridge) was developed. Just as this programme was showing promise War Were Declared so the SMLE kept on going (although with a number of updates, the Mk3***).

The P14 was this new replacement rifle but up-chambered to the current .303 because the Yanks couldn't make the SMLE quick enough but they could make this new P14. The P14 was then handed to anyone who wasn't going to the front lines while the SMLE output went only to front line troops.

After the war the SMLE was found to be good enough and with a few more tweaks (into the No. 4) would be sufficient until a semi-auto came about to replace it

c&rsenal on Youtube goes into great depth about all of this

All the kids are played by grown up actors once they get their powers but why does the one girl get a new actress?
She was already over 18 (college age?  I forget)

Also, won't most of the kids from the first movie be too old to be in this one?
The whole concept of Shazam is that Billy is a little kid.
He can't grow up!  It defeats the purpose then!
They'll have to recast, right?

Just wondering when the trend toward DC costumes involved scales?  Is this supposed to be armor also?

They do look good, but it seems to be overdone soon.  Supe's costume also has/had a similar look, and as mentioned WW's boots and such.

If the heroes are so diverse, why do they all go to them same costumer?

The costumes in-universe are literally magic.

Making them look "realistic" misses the point.

That was in the original; article says they are fixing that in the sequel.  Basically, actress of the unpowered version gets to be the actress of the powered version in the second movie (which, given the character's age, is what they SHOULD have done in the first one).

I never got to see the ending of Wonder Woman.  I absolutely loved it, though.  Wish I'd seen the 1984 one, too.  I'll find the time someday, but man ... good movie.  I liked Shazam, too.  Seems like DC is doing better these days.  Even that remake of that one movie was pretty good.  Flash was kinda wierd, but cyborg was awesome.  Only saw about half of that one, too.

I swear, what has happened to my ability to see movies?!  Anyway, DC is looking really good, based on those.  Can't wait to see if they can knit it together like Marvel did.  Of course, Marvel is now spinning off into nobody-knows-what, but I'll hop on board and ride that train whenever I can, too.

My dad had what he always called a 1908 British Enfield .303.  He lost it in a fire at a friends house after deer season a few years ago.  From pics we have it appeared to just be a standard Lee-Enfield from that era.  It had 1908 stamped on the stock, so most likely manufacture year?

Likely a Mk. 1 SMLE then with the date.  If the visuals don't match that, then maybe a conversion of one of the older long Lees a Converted Mk. II but that would be a really early production example if so.  Still, could be.  Or could be something else I know jack shiat about so there's that heh.
