This isn't a surprise.  It was always easier to convert Tekken characters to Street Fighter's 2D style of gameplay than the other way around.  Besides, was there really anyone asking for Street Fighter's return to 3D gameplay?

Didn't this come out like ten years ago?

*reads TFA*

Oh, it was announced ten years ago.

This honestly sounded like a bad idea on paper.  I would have preferred Tekken vs SNK.

That doesn't sound like something that would take me for a ride, anyway.

I'm actually disappointed in this. I really wanted to play that.
Now I'm just going to hope for Tekken Tag Tournament 3

I just assumed years ago that it had been cancelled for some reason or another.  It could have worked, but it was obvious that it wasn't a priority to get it done.  SFxT was okay.  The most recent MvC was absolutely horrible.

Better than releasing any old nonsense just to get it done and ride the meme wave, ala Duke Nukem Forever

The best part of that debacle was the Zero Punctuation fake review posted so many years ago.

Street Fighter was a bit of a button masher game. You could beat someone with Ken or Ryu by spamming low kicks and getting in a Shoryuken!

Tekken needed a bit of strategy.

I was more of a SoulCalibur guy.

Samurai Shodown vs. SoulCalibur would be damn good too.

I thought it, or one of several similar variants had already come out.

Marvel vs Capcom was always one of my favorites, as well as Super Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition. Mortal Kombat was more my thing though. I don't know if it was the taboo of it being in the news, or the fact that I was playing it when I was 8, but I ate that stuff up.

I never really got into the 360- degree fighters other than trying one or two of the Virtua Fighter games. They were alright, but I liked the 2-D better.

I miss staying up until all hours of the night getting drunk and playing SSBM in college though. I'll still whip people as Mario.

Pffft like there never was any button smashing in Tekken - hello there Howarang kick randomizer!

However, in both games button mashers can be defeated easily by someone with a little skill. Nothing more fun than destroying a Ryu spammer with Zangief/Vega/Dhalsim.

Street Fighter x Tekken was released, which had Tekken characters in a Street Fighter type of game.  There was supposed to be a Tekken x Street Fighter game that did the reverse, but it never materialized.

Let's clarify:

"DOA Vs. Virtua Fighter did it, and made everyone here realize we don't have $50,000,000 to throw at one game like Sega and Tecmo do."

/Sold over 5m copies worldwide. Staggering for a fighting game. Mvc:I barely broke 2m.

Seriously, he was the king of cheese in Tekken 3.

Most fighting games have at least one character that people can button mash and get reasonably far vs the CPU/other newbies. In Tekken you could also lump a few others that had easy combos that could you get you pretty far. Jack/Kuma, Lee, Law, Lei, Baek, etc. The second to face somebody that knows how to block effectively is where button mashing faces a wall.

There is no such game as DOA Vs. Virtua Fighter.  DOA 5 only had a couple of guests from VF.

/Yes, that does matter

I'm convinced the only reason MvC3 was any good was because Eighting actually handled the gameplay development.
