(CollectSpace)   It sounds mundane, but the crew of ISS needed a dispenser for the magic duct tape, so they could use it with one hand. A bunch of high school kids came to the rescue   (collectspace.com) divider line

It looks like one of those tape guns that can be latched down rather than held.

Why can't you use a tape dispenser with one hand?

That was the worst demo video I've ever seen. Couldn't tell what the hell was going on or how it works. Is like the tape dispenser for boxes?

On the ISS, it is customary to write messages to people back on Earth. As you can imagine, when the astronauts took to Twitter they could no longer write all the messages they wanted. So Astronaut Mike Hopkins went to 15 high schools around the U.S., and asked for them to send him pictures of high schoolers holding up pictures of people or objects they respect. For example, the people holding up pictures of their fathers, cats, and icons.

He collected more than 10,000 photos in total. Then he painstakingly edited down the photos to just the student's faces. After that, he pasted them on a decal and affixed them on the outside of the Space Station.

What if there were 2 rolls. The tape sits on one, and the 2nd roll is ~6" diameter made of of slats that are a finger width apart.  The tape rolls out on the slats and you push down through the slats to cut the tape.  Slip your finger up through the slats to grab the tape.  You never tear the last slat, so the tape is always ready to go and unwind some more.  put a big cog on the side of the wheel so it is easy to turn one handed.

Conservation of momentum. When you're in free-fall, the energy you expend in undoing the glue on the tape turns into momentum in whatever direction you're pulling. So if you pull right to left, you'll also be putting energy into your left arm, and will drift that direction.

Doesn't seem like a big deal but if you drift for 10 minutes juuuuust out of reach of a handhold at .05"/minute, it'd piss anyone off.

I misread that: because have you ever used a tape dispenser? They almost never work the way they're supposed to, and in addition, they also need to be grounded. Space is staticky. You don't want sparks in a high-oxygen atmosphere 200 miles up.

I had one for packing boxes, until some bottom feeder stole it when they borrowed my truck to move house.

A little mundane, but when you're up against a cover that prevents pilots from accidentally self-destructing a B-2 bomber, you probably lost before you even started.

There is no high oxygen atmosphere on the ISS.  It's the same oxygen partial pressure as on Earth, with nitrogen making up the balance.

Well, his right arm looks ripped, but his left arms seems kind of average.

I guess there's not much to do on the ISS during sleep periods except surf the Internet.
