Stop selling food to China.

If they had a bumper crop, let them prove it by not starving.

Food Insecurity is a Very Large Scale Problem.

Sell land to people who need land. Don't sell it to the rich who want to build McMansions. Build schools and let people grow their own food.

So much cheaper. Trust me, I know.

Do not lie to children. Lies don't make them smarter, and they don't make them any happier.

China is cold and dry over a lot of places. Their historical prowess with irrigation and dam building is going to hit theoretical limits.

Feeding a billion and a half isn't a trivial exercise.

This is going to be a Big Damn Problem. Globally.

America would be wise to stock pile food for the upcoming thin times but it won't happen. The current drought is going to worsen. We have been warned about fat times and lean times from before Roman times. Do we pay attention and get prepared? Those that live in mansions have plenty in their cupboard, believe me you.

It was even worse a year ago.  You couldn't find pint jars, either.

I ended up buying lots of lid & ring combos in order to get enough lids.  I have rings coming out my ears.

There's this little obscure boutique store on the internet.  They call it Amazon for some reason, don't know if the owner's a Brazilian or what.  Anyway, they have canning lids, just bought some last week.

The wealthy have been buying up farm land in big numbers over the last decade.  The biggest private owner of farms in the USA is Bill Gates.  China has also been buying up US agriculture, especially pork.
Thanks to climate change, crop yields are going to decline over time, as population increases.  This may lead to stabby shoots time.

Nick Crundall, a senior strategist from the Australian firm Market Check, thinks the Chinese authorities probably want to allay domestic fears about supply and limit the amount they will have to pay for imported grains.

A total shutdown of information and arresting anyone who tries to provide it is certainly the way to inspire confidence and limit a massive market swing in the upward direction.

They should ask internet expert Barbra Streisand how well that strategy works out.

That claim by China is a simple ploy to keep the prices down as they sign contracts for future deliveries. If the capitalists know they have a shortage, the price goes up.

Who says let's not talk about Ethiopia? Talk all you want. And some of us will talk about the country of 1.5 billion that will pay whatever it needs to on the open market in the event of running out of food.

Slamming the door shut on information outflow is a pretty poor strategy if your aim is to keep prices low. People assume the worst.

That's the confusing part, at least for me - I mean, we must know the actual situation, as we've loads of satellites in orbit taking pictures of pretty much everywhere to a resolution that would seem astounding in the '70s.

China can lie to its own population, but not to the rest of us, not about this.

I think that's the key - China can buy enough grain on the market to feed their population, but they would rather not create a panic that causes those purchases to be more expensive than necessary.

I don't live in a mansion, unless a house from 1800s on 1 acre counts. The 1 acre can produce enough food (veggies, fruit, meat and eggs) that I rarely visit a grocery store year round. I could make more, but I'd have to find someone to help garden consistently. Trouble is, even in a financially depressed rural community there isn't many that have knowledge on how to do any of it (garden, cook and preserve). Even offering $25/hr I can only get part time help. Most don't consider growing their own as valuable, many see it as beneath them. All the while always mouthing how they can't afford the basics of life.

I've come to understand that at least here, in Canada, people are deathly allergic to hard work and want nothing to do with learning new skills. We pride ourselves on our ignorance. As the inflation eats the remaining disposable income, a lot of folks will find themselves in hardship, and will only have themselves to blame.

A stocked pantry, with top quality foods, at a price of free is the way to go. Especially if you throw in home made wine and garden grown pot.

Unfortunately, this problem is self-correcting. For examples let's look to any of the local famines of last 50 years.

Those that do, will prosper; those that blindly follow will perish. Circle of life.

China's communist leadership understands this at organizational level and will prepare for what's coming. Capitalism puts fingers in ears and screams 'profit' repeatedly at the top of it's lungs.

Sounds wise; if you already bought what you need at low price and want your adversary to pay extra, you make soft moves like this one to force the hand of the market. Supply-demand requires it.

It's quite similar approach to how USA brought Soviets to bankruptcy too.

Here is the problem with that. Read the link I posted above about the Great Grain Robbery by the Soviet Union. When you put false info on the market like that it doesn't just affect price. It also changes production schedules.

I ordered from Amazon already. When my order was a day late I got an "undeliverable" "damaged" notice.
I am trying again, different provider, but Amazon "fulfillment."
My wife had similar results last year, ordered some, got zip.

Feeding China isn't our problem.  It is theirs.  Let them feed their own people, especially if they had a bumper crop.  If they didn't, let them come hat in hand and tell the truth.  If they choose starvation, hopefully the people choose to eat their leaders.

I didn't make a billion of them.  And I didn't lie about the crop failures.  I assume they are telling us the truth and am willing for them to be proven right when their people don't starve.  Wouldn't it be a glorious thing if China had a bumper crop and really stuck it to the world?

Why would they starve?  They have plenty of food, says their government.  If not, I bet the leaders are fat enough to eat.

You seem to be laboring under the supposition that problems with the world stay neatly within national borders.

I'm guessing the device you're using to post here has (at least) Chinese parts. I'm going to go out on a limb and suppose you understand that the Chinese have a fairly large military with ICBM capability.

We live on one planetary surface. Other's problems will absolutely cause you problems as well, at a certain scale.

Ah, but we are not telling China our fields of phone vines had a bumper crop.  And then secretly Gitmo all the phone crop advisers, then buying up all the phone production.  China knows we don't grow enough phones to feed our population.

Also, if we cut China off completely, I am sure apple would find a way to make phones in the US.  Just like China found a way to grow a bumper crop this year.

Let those Xi licking mother farkers reap their own crop or lack of crop.  We got problems too.  Why send China food, and let them win the war for the future.  I would rather we had food and China had 10 smart phones per starving person.
