If you have a thousand-dollar pen, you deserve to lose it.

dionysusaur: If you have a thousand-dollar pen, you deserve to lose it.

That's not true. I bought my twin brother an $800 Mont Blanc when he graduated law school. That was 20 years ago, and he still doesn't make as much money as I do in IT. But he still uses it to sign paperwork.

Also, it's a dick move to steal anything from anybody. What the hell is wrong with people?

I'm betting Paxton only returned it because it was out of ink.

Fark him.

The point here seems to be to brag you make more than your lawyer brother?

Is he the guy Paxton tried to steal a pen from?

The point here is that not everyone with a $1000 pen bought it. Are you dense? Signatures are important for attorneys, and pens are a good gift.

Same thing a mansion with more rooms than the owner will ever use does, or a yacht that has its own yacht, or an expensive meal that has gold on it. It's about showing off wealth.

$5 for parts, $95 for marketing, $200 for profit, $500 for kickbacks to the seller.

I say one slightly nice thing about a journalist and you dig up a 2014 article so I have to once again disavow the entire profession. I'm pretty sure anything from yesterday would have served.

It's probably very well made, and they don't sell in volume.  Some parts are probably gold-plated and other parts might be turned out of special wood.

All of that explains maybe $250 of the price.  The rest is marketing and name recognition.

Can someone recommend a nice pen under $5?

Game over man!!!!!

I restore Parker 51s which are kind of patted on the head and given a lollipop by the "real" fountain pen folks.  I also have a few daily-use fountain pens that I love and don't mind getting the nib bent or scratched up.

There is something magical when you use the right pen, with the right ink, on the right paper.  This is doubled for me when it's a fountain pen, especially one I brought back to life.
We all have our quirks.

I used to be a big fan of the Pilot Precise V5, but it leaks aggressively in airplanes.  Right now I'm enjoying the UniBall Vision Elite.

I like a good pen but I'm way more picky about mechanical pencils.  Pentel Quicker Clicker FTW.

It has Montblanc's logo on it. Also, for that money, it will have a handmade gold nib. There's neither $800 worth of gold, or $800 worth of labor in that, though. Montblancs do make a nice scrawl of your signature. But so does a $3 Office Depot house brand rollerball pen. What makes some ugly ass Gucci handbag worth just shy of $2,500?

These were seized, each full of liquid cocaine. I don't know how much that costs, but I imagine it pays to buy in bulk.
