Ranch was made for this, not mayo.

Am I the only one growing bacon in my garden?

Chop the tomatoes into 1/2" cubes and mix with along with chopped basil, fresh mozzarella pearls and pitted kalamata olives in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle some Italian dressing and olive oil over the top and mix a bit more.

Serve chilled.

I don't like bacon, but even I know a BLT without bacon is just a vegetable sandwich.

uhmmmm, so his mamma "invented" the low-carb, bread-free, garden tomato "sandwich"?

given good enough tomatoes, i'd ABSOLUTELY eat that. BUT i'd want a side of crusty sourdough, or fresh french baguette for the eatin' part of the picnic party.....

2021-06-19 10:54:58 PM
That "dish" is just a mess that will be a soggy mess by the time it gets to the picnic. Bring a ball of fresh mozzarella, a tomato, some basil, and you can easily prepare it on site. Roast some garlic, but that depends on the distance because either it will stink up your car or fellow mass transit riders will hate you.

I mean that would go good on top of a bit of spaghetti and torched, covered with Parmesan.

By itself? No.

a truly great garden tomato should NOT be served truly cold. i mean, a great enough 'mater will still taste 1000 times better than a supermarket "tomato" after chilling, but there is an actual reason not to chill high quality tomatoes TOO much (now if the room temp is at or above 100 this may all change....)

this article talks about chilling standard store tomatoes, after a caveat at the beginning about garden tomatoes:

In a proper BLT, the bread and lettuce are the bass line, the tomatoes play lead, and the bacon is backup/seasoning.

I'm not entirely sure what this is.

And sure, the linked dish may sound a bit off but I'd sure as hell give it a shot before passing judgement. A lot of things sound weird until you try them.

Sometimes (all the times) I like to make Bs. That's just a bacon sandwich. An ungodly amount of bacon. No lettuce. No tomato. Just bacon and mustard and Mayo. It's something I ate when I was a picky eater as a child and now it's a comfort food.

/ why am I mentioning this? iDK. I guess I just needed to unburden myself of my sins.

The worst part is that there's no sandwich here. Also? No lettuce.

Seriously, this is just sliced tomatoes with mayo & herbs. That's it. Someone felt that this called for a recipe.

You know what the worst part of this dish is?

That 1/4" slices of tomato are called thick slices.

Also, just bring some raw tomatoes and eat them like apples. You don't need a salty mayo mess.

Heh, I didn't bother to read TFA, but that's farking appalling.

Instead of a plate I'd lay all that out on a thin, crusty piece of bread. Then I'd use tomato sauce instead of tomatoes. I'd leave out the mayo since tomato in sauce form serves the purpose. Then I'd sprinkle cheese on it as well as herbs. I wouldn't feel so bad leaving out the bacon but I'd probably replace bacon with another meat like pepperoni.

Yeah, that's a big no from me. I don't even like Mayo on a burger with tomato on it. That pink juice they make is just... *hork*.

Bon Appetit can keep their trailer park bruschetta.

Because there is no better way to make an impression than walking around with watery mayo dripped all over your crotch It's not an appealing plating presentation either May I suggest:

Jesus christ, liking bacon is not a personality trait.

2021-06-20 9:42:51 AM
Lots of people have complained about the missing ingredients, but it's also worth mentioning that a good BLT is about contrasting textures.

Crunchy toast, crispy bacon, juicy tomato, crunchy (but a different type of crunchy) lettuce, a little creamy mayo.

Tomatoes and mayo might taste fine, but it's missing the texture of a BLT.

This is a non-dairy herbless caprese salad at best.

duckpoopy: Jesus christ, liking bacon is not a personality trait.

I dunno. I only have marginally more trust for someone who genuinely dislikes bacon than I do for someone who dislikes dogs...or cheese.

And I'm not talking about not partaking because of dietary, religious, or ethical reasons. Or in the case of dogs, not wanting to actually put in the work it takes to own one and be its companion. Those are all perfectly reasonable.

I mean the cases of "oh I tried bacon a couple times and just don't like it," or "I've never found a cheese I enjoy," or "I just hate dogs-I don't like being around them and I certainly don't want to pet one."

Those are the kinds of statements that make me want to go, "okay, you can take off your human mask now-I've caught on to your ruse."

This would be great on some toasted sour dough. Can't foresee these holding up at a picnic though. Alternatively if you are a freak like me who loves tomatoes and mayo - fry up some green ones and make a remoulade sauce.

El vomito.

If they went back to breeding food for taste instead of supermarket appeal, you wouldn't end up with so much "covering up one taste with another" like this.  Eat the vegetable for its own taste, not just something to justify breaking out the fatty, salty salad dressing.

Ranch is what bland people eat when they want to jazz up a "salad" that is entirely composed of a quarter of an iceberg lettuce and some slices of cucumber.

Ranch is what bland people smother their mild wings in so they don't get a tummyache.

One of the worst things to happen to bacon is when people started baking or microwaving it instead of frying it.

Good bacon is mostly fat/ Delicious, salty, squishy fat.  That's where the flavor and texture is.  Otherwise it's like trying to eat gummy Grape-Nuts.

Baking is acceptable as long as you don't use one of those wire racks that drains the fat while it is cooking.  It needs to cook in its' own juices.

I work in a restaurant, you CAN deep fry bacon in 45 seconds in a pinch, and deep fried bacon sounds amazing to a layman (I thought it sounded great as a kid).  The bacon that comes out of the fryer tastes "meh", and the bacon grease just shortens the life of the canola/soybean oil you cooked it in. :(

Don't eat lettuce (can't) and don't like wings -- blah greasy animal fat, yuck.

One of my favorite sandwiches is a chewy french roll with lots of heavy duty mayo, add sliced tomatoes and some onion slivers ---don't forget fresh ground pepper!

When you worked in the restaurant for so long you hate their menu and make dinner for yourself after the kitchen is closed.

Whoever said "just eat them like apples" was right on the money, too. Beefsteak tomatoes either eat them over the sink or outside. Don't think I'd have a mayo dip for them, they don't need enhancing when they're ripe.

This sounds like ensalada Chilena, but with mayo added. Original recipe: sliced onions (soaked a bit in salt water or sweated with salt or sugar and rinsed), cut-up tomatoes, some kinda parsley or cilantro or something. Eat.

I throughout reject your comparison. Despite preferring some chew to my bacon (depending on dish) in general, a well done steak is not comparable to crispy bacon at all.

I saw the recipe. Not a huge fan of mayonnaise as a base for dressing. It just seems gloopy and would mask the flavor a good tomato. A vinaigrette made with olive oil and some lemon juice or vinegar appeals more to my tastes.

My mom used to make this when I was a kid. I didn't remember it until now, but it was pretty good. Acidic tomatoes and creamy Mayo are a good combination.
