40+ years ago an acquaintance was trippy balls on LSD with a couple beers in him and started feeling totally lost on a major road he's traveled a 1000 times.  So he imagines and does what any rational person would do when feeling lost. You ask directions. He  stops at the helper station, the police department that is well known to him, where it's at and 4 miles on a straight road to his house. To ask for directions to his house. They arrested him for DUI, no bulging bags of drugs.

My current insane job is running background checks for gun purchases. In my state, this is a centralized thing, done by the Department of Public Safety, instead of by individual gun dealers. Some days, I feel pretty great about denying someone who has a domestic violence conviction. Some days, I feel like an asshole for denying people for stupid, stupid reasons.

Another division in our office is the CHP people, Concealed Handgun Permits, and we share info back and forth. This one guy had gone into his local sheriff's office to fill out the paperwork for his CHP, and apparently put his medical marijuana card down on the counter while digging through his wallet for his ID. That's evidence of marijuana use within the last year, which is a federal prohibitor for buying a gun. So he was denied the permit, and then when he tried to buy a gun like a week later, I denied him for drug use.

I feel really bad about that one. This was clearly a guy who was trying to do everything right, and got completely hosed by doing so.

/then I denied someone who was under indictment for felony assault - strangulation, and I felt a little better.

People are trying to suggest this guy is stupid. Have you even considered that maybe he forgot he had the drugs and money on him?

Sounds like that should have been a, "Didn't see that, was looking at the paperwork in front of me." event for the concealed permit people.

Even discounting the other crap, an ounce of weed plus is pretty hard to forget about - it's large enough you aren't gonna not notice it in your pocket.

Thanks! I have an appointment for my conceal and carry permit coming up, so this is great info. Cheers!

Yeah that's about what I'd expect from a pothead, being slow and incompetent at basic tasks like removing an ID card from a wallet. Him not carrying a concealed gun is probably best for everyone.

Easy to happen when you start with six ounces in your pocket.

Considering that he had over a half-ounce of meth (which is roughly one hand-full) and over $7500 in cash-split into two bundles...IMHO it is likely that he forgot he had the drugs because he was high on those same drugs.

Therefore, because he violated the number one rule of dope dealing (Don't get high on your own supply) he is statutorily stupid.

I wonder what had happened to him to cause him to go to the Po Po in the first place? You go Girl!

Yes, I was wondering that too. Something about reporting a woman?

There are people who will always get in trouble with the police.  And they will always find someone else to blame.  I once knew someone like that.  He lived to get high on whatever drug was handy.  When he road a motorcycle off a road and nearly got killed, it was the fault of the other driver because of his headlights.  When he overdosed on something, it was because someone made him chug a beer.  He never once took responsibility for his own stupid actions and was continuously in trouble with the law.  I lost touch with that idiot a long time ago.  I would not be surprised if he was dead or in prison.  Or died in prison.

If you have reached the point where you forget you have that much money and that much drugs on you, stupid is a given.

Have any of you considered that he's just a nice guy who wanted to share with the cops in recognition of how hard of a job they have?  Police have a hard job and this guy could have just wanted to help them relax.

Stupid gets robbed once they start dealing $500 of merch.

I think that's why I never met anyone dealing coke who didn't carry a gun.

You know, I'm quite intelligent and methodical, and I tend to think through my plans before carrying them out. I mention this because I still do catastrophically stupid things on occasion. I read about someone like this and wonder how, with that level of idiocy, they aren't regularly setting their hair on fire or hand-washing plugged-in appliances.
