Well back in the day. I would frequent a couple of gay bars. One was "Mable's Beauty Shop and Chain Saw Repair" in BHM ALABAMA.

Very Much a "dive bar"

Well, one day Cornelia Wallace. (The former wife of George Wallace) starts visiting the bar and selling her book.
Basically she was broke and was doing sofa surfing in 'bama...selling her book out the back of her 1979 station wagon.

My Dad was once a Democratic state rep..and knew Wallace...etc..and I thought I'd get him a book.
WELL...Cornelia was in the BHM news the next day showing her selling her book at gay bars. And also charge 5 bucks to see the bloody gown she saved from the George Wallace Assassination attempt.

I was outed by the former First Lady of Alabama.
But also dad HATED CORNELIA...because she was a insane drug addict. Which pretty much sums it up.
Even the gay guys she sofa surfed with eventually kicked her out.

That is one of the best stories I've heard in ages! Thanks!

I also met my Current Husband...at "Mabel's Beauty Shop and ChainSaw Repair" (gay bar)
he was a fresh off the boat Marine..and I was a simple computer tech.
Well, we started talking and talking about books. He was a Heinlein Fan...I was a Heinlein fan.
And I had a AUTOGRAPHED SIGNED AND NUMBERED Copy of a FIRST EDITION Heinlein. "Friday"

Then it was like "Hey...wanna come back to my place.....I can show my Heinlein"
and he did...and I did.
It'll be 35 or so years this year. I think.

Having been in the south a spell, I have some Waffle House stories. However, for the purposes of this thread I will stay on topic.

Shirley's Country Kitchen, a small, family-run soul food buffet in Newnan, GA has two daily main course specials (outstanding fried chicken, meatloaf, fish, ribs, pork chops, etc.), several garden-fresh veggies, fluffy biscuits and/or fresh cornbread,  and cobbler, pie, or banana pudding. Wear stretchy pants. I once ate there before grocery shopping so that I wouldn't buy too much. I ran into an old friend at the store who hugged me, and commented on my vanilla perfume. I had eaten so much of Ms Shirley's  banana pudding it was coming out of my pores.

Well, for one, It's dingy. The flicker of the fluorescent fixtures reminds you of the hallway in a cheap motel. The leftovers are burned on the stove. There's a general air of tension, like the stew of smoke and despair could be shattered any minute by the bellow of a wild man or a sudden knife fight. There's practically no security. And when you do get it, the food is amateur at best.

But that's just my kitchen...

Definitely a captivating tale, and happy anniversary!

Only went there once, but I'm glad I got to see it before this temple to alcohol was torn down. It was shabby and joyless and workmanlike and cheap, but all that made it charming.

It's closed down now (and not because of the pandemic), but it was... "quirky": a lot of the seating was taken from cars, it had a skeleton in a cage suspended from the ceiling, and somebody had carved "Lars Ulrich sucks c#ck" into the bathroom ceiling; I liked it because I generally liked the "energy" of the people there, and because I once ended up mutual-hair-stroking/playing (my hair was shoulder length at that time) with a girl I had a crush on

We have 3.5 faves here in Indy.
The Pawn Shop - cheap drinks and good food.
The Rook - cheap drinks and GREAT food.
The Alley Cat - now has 2 sections.  The older part with an entry down an Alley..  Great bar with punk and metal on the jukebox, mid-century decor and a bit down-at-heels.  This part is called The Sh*tty Kitty  The newer section opens onto the street, is cleaner and newer, and quieter.  Fantastic food. This pert is called The Pretty Kitty.

Sorry, hipster.  Don't want to start seeing a sea of man-buns explaining the "vibe" of the place to their similarly be-coiffed hipster 'buds'.

Bill's Toasty in Taylorville, IL.
Open 24/7/365.
10 seats at the counter. 4 at the booths. Breakfast & Lunch menu.
Grill and frier right next to counter.

Favorite meal:
Fried pork tenderloin, fried mushrooms, fried cheeseballs & a hand made real vanillia malted.
(Why yes, I am fat.)

Charlie B's, Missoula. It's a classic dive bar with an extra long bar and the Dinosaur Cajun Cafe in the back, great food. I'm not really a drinker, but the bar part is always busy and they have had steady clientele for like 50 years or so, all with very little renovation.

I've no idea if The CC Club (Minneapolis) survived the pandemic, but I hopefully so. Fairly certain they never clean out the taps, lending (to the Grain Belt Premium tap, at least) a rather banana-esque aftertaste to your brew that can't really be replicated.

There's nothing worse than seeing the sunrise on a Monday morning  when you're supposed to be going to work.

SoundOfOneHandWanking: There's nothing worse than seeing the sunrise on a Monday morning  when you're supposed to be going to work.

I worked in a restaurant two blocks away that had a shower in the employee restroom in the back. I would leave after closing down the kitchen on Saturday night, drink way too much in way too many places, end up at Haley's. It's the kind of place where regulars wave to the bartender across the crowd of casuals and then pick up their drink from the end of the bar. It opens at around 6pm and doesn't close till around 9am.
When I could see sunlight through the windows I knew it was time to head down the street and get started on prep for brunch
.
I was in my early to mid twenties and I could bounce back with ease. Pretty sure it'd kill me if I tried it now.
