Shows just how desperate we're getting for fresh entertainment.

/it was middling, but no Zombieland, Zombieland 2, Pandemic, Generation Z, Z-Nation, Z-babies, Zombie punk killers from space, Undead Zombie Party part 8, Dawn of the Zombie, Z-Dawn, Dawn-Z, Zombies!, Look Who's Zombie, The Fast and the Zombie, Zombieville, How to meet a Zombie, Zombie High or Cooking with Brains.
//just maybe this genre is a tad over-saturated eh?

Entertainment? I thought this was a documentary about current events.

Does anybody have to pay extra to see it?  Is anybody taking the fact it's essentially free into account?  What are the viewing numbers of that horseshiat 'Director's Commentary' series on Snyder?

This is great news! It means we'll be getting many, many more Zack Snyder films in the future.

I had lowered expectations so I was fine with it.  It wasn't good but it wasn't terrible.

Then they had to play The Cranberries' "Zombie" towards the end.

That made me angry.

I confess to two viewings and I farking hated it. It's the perfect example of doing absolutely everything horribly wrong and stupid in a movie, topping his previous work over at DC. There's not a single scene in there that isn't shiat in some way. The only reason I made it to the end the first time and went back for seconds is because it's a massive confidence boost in my own storytelling abilities and to examine the disaster like I was on the Warren Commission.

Yeah, this was a decent B movie, the kind I'd happily attend as a kid in the 70s, because you only ever expect a couple bad ass scenes anyway (and maybe some boobs). I probably would have gone with more atmosphere and lost the stupid zombies altogether but that's me.

Train to Busan
The Girl With All the Gifts
Shaun of the Dead
One Cut of the Dead
Rec
28 Days Later (I know...not technically zombies)

For an inundated genre filled with hot farking garbage, there are still good zombie movies that get made. Usually not in the USA though.

I loved USA Up All Night.

Anyone of those movies were logically more consistent and less boring than Army of the Dead. Shorter too.

No expectations are low enough.

What are you talking about? Everything Romero has done, the Dawn of the Dead remake, both Zombielands, the first two Return of the Living Deads, Re-Animator, Resident Evil ,and WWZ (which is NOT the book). Those are all US movies.

We have had some notable imports though which are also quite good - [REC], Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later and Zombie. I enjoyed Train to Busan, but the sequel was terrible. I would put it above Army of the Dead, but not by much. Zombie movies are a genre that the whole world plays with and the US has done plenty of great ones.

What's so strange is that one would think that b-movies in theaters or made for TV movies existed because of the lack of options. That someone was flipping channels and landed on the dumb zombie movie because there was nothing better on. But no. It turns out even with a huge number of options these dumb low effort movies still exist and even thrive.

They need to digitally insert Tig Navarro into more films.

There was a time when silly fun was schlock like Evil Dead, not just any random bullshiat in front of a screen with enough flashing lights and color. Maybe when more and more elevate B-grade cult movies into art, this is a result.

I was SO thrilled when I watched the prologue!  Damn--we're learning so much about this badass chick!  She's the most interesting one out of this whole bunch!  Can't wait to learn her story--SPLAT.  I was aghast.  Then spent the rest of the movie trying to see if it would ever live up to the opening scene.  Nope.  Sucked.  Hated it with the fiery passion of a thousand blazing suns.  Irredeemably bad.

We seem to have differences of opinion, which can happen on subjective topics like movies. The things you wrote I underlined make me wonder the same thing - what are you talking about? WWZ (the movie, not the book) was hot farking garbage. Everything Romero has done? Everything? Zombieland 2?

Great action flick imo.

I liked it more than the later George Romero outings (which I actually thought this was until I watched it)

Of course, far too low-brow for the resident Fark aristocrats.

It is that offensive to you that some people like dumb movies, perhaps even in the full awareness of how dumb those movies are?

Did I think it was good? Ha. No. Good for Snyder, maybe.

Am I angry that people enjoyed it? No. People need joy wherever they can get it right now.

The biggest problem with Army of the Dead is it keeps pausing to suggest ideas for better movies.

"What if there were smart zombies with a hierarchy, and that actually meant something beyond the zombies giving you a head start before inevitably zombie rushing you?"

"What if there was a time loop for some reason and we did something clever with that?"

"What if there was an intelligent metaphor to be drawn between internment camps and zombie quarantine zones and this movie tried to draw it?"

"What if a real heist movie with all the complex Oceans 11 type scheming happened during a zombie movie, as opposed to just a standard zombie movie where a couple guys crack open a safe while everyone else just wanders around doing whatever?"

"What if there was a zombie outbreak in Vegas, and a movie really leaned into the shallow glitz and costuming of Vegas so there were waves of celebrity impersonators and hasbeen comedians and Cirque stars, instead of just the usual pile of generic shamblers?"

"What if we didn't poorly rip off the tense scene in Train to Busan where the heroes try silently crawling across the luggage racks hoping not to alert the zombies, making everyone wish they were just watching Train to Busan instead?"

"What if we bucked the trend of stretching out paper thin premises and made a tightly paced and exciting 90 minute thrill ride instead of a 2 1/2 hour long slog?"

"What if we promised a zombie action comedy and actually included the comedy?"

The movie felt like someone took light notes at an early brainstorming session and then someone else confused it with a script.

Apparently Snyder's intent is to start a franchise with it. Or technically continue one, I guess.

I'm so glad I'm not cursed with watching a dumb action flick and instead of enjoying it...

burdening myself with attempting to deconstruct all 6 of Aristotle's play elements so I can pretend I'm really smart.

Yeah, I should stop paying mild attention to the movies I watch and just blindly consume everything. Are you going to honestly claim you've never watched anything in your life and thought it could have been better?

If so, the only one being played is the poor sap who lets you pick which movies to sit through. Undiscriminating viewers might have more fun, but no one values their recommendations.

Yeah, but you don't start a franchise by pitching ideas to the audience. You pitch them to the studio and actually settle on an idea to develop into a full script. Army of the Dead barely qualifies as a rough draft.

I didn't hate the movie, I just didn't see the point in making it at all. It had nothing new to add or to say.
