*sniffs back a tear*

Gosh, would you look at that? They've evolved so much, they've learned to defund themselves!

If you have a dedicated crowd control unit, it needs to go.

have resigned from the assignment

Not from the force, but from a position with too many eyes and cameras watching.

I wonder how egregious the assault was to actually get charged?

Wonder no more - click the last part of this sentence in TFA
"The indictment marks the first time a Portland police officer has faced prosecution for striking or firing at someone during a protest, according to the Oregonian."

I keep hearing about all the violence and destruction in Portland that is allegedly destroying the city. The only place I hear about it is in web forums in vague terms about BLM and ANTIFA.

That tells me nothing of consequence is happening.

"The assignment is voluntary and the officers will remain on the force and continue their regular assignments,"

So hardly anything has changed and no skin off their back.

So do you expect cops to patrol without cars?
Do you expect firemen to do their work without hoses?
No?!
Then how do you expect crowd control to do their job if they can't assault protestors?

/and because apparently Fark needs to hear it enunciated, that is not a serious comment

Probably some couple of hundred for hazard pay I'm guessing.

/was going to say that leadership should punish them for colluding, but I'm guessing leadership were the ones with the idea and promised them priority in overtime or something

Repeat, but still makes me laugh.

Wow, this faint scent of consequences is having a HUGE effect on the police. Maybe if we'd done this long ago, we wouldn't have so many dead at the hands of police.

Thing is, beating the shiat out of people was the renumeration for riot duty.
Without that incentive, there's no joy in the job.

It's honestly pretty milquetoast in comparison to a whole lot off other things that were caught on camera. Don't get me wrong, this asshole deserves to be charged. He took a gratuitous shot with his baton to the face of a woman he had already pushed down, before just walking away.

If the DA has the balls to charge this guy, maybe, just maybe, some of the other crap will get charged as well.
